Black Ops 4 Zombies Mode Travels Back in Time, Here’s How and Why

Treyarch may have decided to dump the traditional single-player campaign for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 but when it comes to the undead, the developer is promising a more exhilarating storytelling experience than ever before.

Here is everything to know about the accompanying zombies mode for the upcoming installment.

The dead rises once again but not at the behest of mad scientists and their harrowing genetic experiments. There is a more sinister body at play, an evil cult that dates back thousands of years. It holds an ancient artifact that can curse all nearby living bodies to walk the earth forever with an insatiable hunger for flesh and blood.

Diego, Shaw, Bruno, and Scarlett are the four lead characters that travel through time to defeat this mysterious threat. They each have unique personalities and traits, as well as their own fighting preferences to fend off zombies with.

Diego, for example, is cunning and loves to wield dual blades. Shaw, on the other hand, is calculated and accustomed to taking shields or lobbying grenade-like vials to stay safe. Bruno is the powerhouse and purely relies on his brute strength and fists. Scarlett, finally, does the dirty work for the lot by resorting to long blades or pistols.

Their journey begins in a cave where they inhale weird fumes to jump across three different timelines in history.

The first map is called “the Nine” and takes the time travelers to Rome, right into the gladiator pits that are overseen by the evil cult. Slaves are sent here to fight against newly turned zombies, all for the amusement of the Colosseum. Unfortunately for the protagonists, they must only arm themselves with weapons from the particular era such as swords, shields, axes, and spears.

The second map is called “Voyage of Despair” and boards the characters upon the ill-fated Titanic. While they thought that their plan to sneak into the vault and steal the artifact was going well, the situation goes horribly wrong when everyone on the ship, including the cult leader, turns into zombies.

The third map is called “Blood of the Dead” and sends the troupe inside a prison that appears to be inspired by “Mob of the Dead” from Black Ops 3. It is unknown how this setting ties in with the storyline but players can expect access to all kinds of modern weapons.

Besides the undead, Treyarch has made plans to battle monotony as well. The zombies mode in Black Ops 4 will allow players to access “Custom Mutations” to change a hundred gameplay elements at the start. This includes adjusting the mobility speed of zombies, their health bars and damage, and much more.

There will be seasonal events as well called “Callings” that are confirmed to take place on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis. These will feature limited time challenges with the return of difficulty levels. More content shall be revealed with time.

Take note that all four characters are going to be available for a four-player cooperative experience. However, players may also choose to go solo. In this case, Treyarch has confirmed the availability of bots to take control of the other three characters.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 is scheduled to release on October 12, 2018, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. The three zombie maps are going to be available for players at launch on day one, which is a first for the Call of Duty franchise.
