Yooka-Laylee Coming to Nintendo Switch on December 7, Studio Loves Switch
After a long wait, we finally have a release date for Yooka-Laylee Nintendo Switch. According to Playtonic, the game is releasing on Switch on December 7. The director, Gavin Price, assured the community that the game is properly optimized for the Switch which is why it took so long.
Speaking to Eurogamer, Price explained that working with Switch was a learning experience. They are using middleware engine and there were a lot of things that needed to be figured out in order to assure a fantastic experience on Nintendo’s machine. Switch being new to the market played a role as well.
It’s a new platform where we’re using a middleware engine, so it adds another link to the chain – especially when we’re the first game of this scale on this engine on this platform. There’s been lots of stuff to learn, especially when you’ve made decisions already for other versions of the game which you have to unbuild and then rebuild. We wanted it to be fantastic and to have achieved a really high optimization level.
We’ve had really great support from Unity and Nintendo – and folks at Team 17 – from people on the engine side of things to help us understand what’s going on. They’ve put a lot of work and effort into the engine side of things where maybe they didn’t even realize there was a problem until someone comes along with a game like this.
Yooka-Laylee is already available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC. It is a widely loved title and is the perfect fit for the Nintendo Switch.
You can pre-order the game from third-party retailers or get it from Nintendo eShop.
