Assassin’s Creed 3 is bigger than any of its predecessors. It packs all the gameplay elements present in the previous games and bring forth a lot of fresh new features. One of these new features is lock picking. There are locked doors in this game you can open up through lock picking.

Picking a lock is very easy in Assassin’s Creed 3. I’m sure many of you have spent a lot of your time trying to pick locks only to end up cursing at the locked door (Ahm…Fallout…Ahm) in the previous games, but that won’t happen in Assassin’s Creed 3.

Only annoying aspect of Lock Picking is that it can be a bit frustrating at times when you are not able to hold the buttons in position! For more help on Assassin’s Creed 3, read our Outfits, Mementos and Treasure Chests Locations Guide.

Following are the steps you need to perform to open up locked doors and chests:

Step #1
Gently rotate the left analog stick until your controller starts to vibrate. Once it does, hold your left stick in that position.

Step #2
Do the exact same with your right analog stick. Hold it where the controller starts to vibrate.

Step #3
Now repeatedly press the RT/R1 button to break the lock and open the door/chest.

There you have it. This is a new small little mechanism in the gameplay but it sure adds another layer of depth to it.

that ‘s why next time a smuggler breaks into your residence you should consider inviting him to join you play assassin’s creed III over a desperate multiple failure to loot a chest or pick a door lock instead of busting his head off with a baseball bat…

    • Faye Green

No, lock picking is automatic from the beginning.

    • Faye Green

You know, I just got an idea of trying the great finger (middle) to see if i can speed up a bit. If not… then we all should get a petition together and send it to Ubisoft to fix this issue.

    • Faye Green

      Thanks,
I will try that. For some reason I can pick open a door, but not the chests.
I have the soldiers pick on me and they try to kill me, but I whip their arse so bad, they don’t know what hit them, then I pickpocket ( a long as there is no more soldiers walking near by.

You must be joking… I have a devil of a time picking locked chests. I have a tendency to panic since I am racing against the timer, then stress along with frustration kicks in after the 5th time. My sister can open the locks easy, her RT finger has rapid movements ( i guess from typing a lot 40 wpm with gusts of 50)…, my RT finger isn’t fast enough (a tad bit slower and I type 20 wpm with a gust of 22).
I believe it all has to do with reflexes a lot.
I wish there is a patch that fixes any issue with lock picking.

Wow there seems to be a lot of outrage about this lockpicking stuff almost seems like there’s going to be a REVOLUTION about it.

        Maybe, Maybe.

This is _THE MOST_ bugged part of the game. 50% of the time it’s spin spin spin spin – and never catches. I have to exit and re-enter to fake it out, and that doesn’t always work. Why in gods name did they let this #$%& out the door without more QC? A good example of lock-picking is Skyrim. No 3-way wiggle horsesh1t that unjacks midway through the process. I r e a l l y hate grinding on pointless BS. I hate swinging through the trees flying off a branch without any control. I hate getting my ass mobbed by guards out of nowhere. It’s complete BS. No other game I own is so full of frustrating gameplay bugs as the AC series.

Why they introduced this into the game is beyond me. It’s bad enough that you have to hold the analog sticks dead still and press R1 to pick a door lock but it’s close to impossible to open the chests by multiple presses of R1 AND keep the analog sticks still. Whoever came up with this has turned the game stupidly hard. If you have any sort of disability (I have carpal tunnel syndrome) it makes these sequences immossible to complete and ruins the enjoyment of the game. Who ever you are I think you’re just plain mean to include this.

You obviously haven’t played ac3 on pc : im trying to find out if its possible to lock pick on it

    • Jadis

Not sure what the hell you’retalking about. I’ve been cursing every lock in AC3. This is dumbest mechanics in any game I’ve ever played.

    • barryou

i have a spinal cord injury my thumbs work but my fingers are slow i may get rid of this game because the only thing i cant do is lockpick the chests.

While I’ve been loving Assassin’s Creed III so far (got it for Christmas), the lockpicking mini game has been the most frustrating by far (even including Morris and the other betting games.) I tried the middle finger suggestion, but no matter what once I get both the left and right joysticks into position, which is a challenge in of itself, if I try to budge my right hand even slightly it screws up. I managed a couple of times by sheer luck, but I just stumbled on a way that really works.

      Tape.

I wish I was joking, but by taping both joysticks into position, it lets me mash that RT (on XBox) to my hearts content without worrying about what my thumbs are doing. If you are like me and have bad hand-eye coordination, give it a try.

are you fucking kidding me??!! its one of the hardest things on the frikkin game it pisses me off:(

    • J

This worked for my 9 year old son, thanks so much!

    • David

      yes Oliver is a lifesaver!!!!

Picking the lock on a chest is much harder than lock picking a door. It took me like 25 minutes of trial and error to pick the lock of a chest, and I finally discovered how to pick locks of this type. The hardest part is keeping the left and right analog sticks while button mashing the R1/RT (XBOX 360), which is timed so you have to be quick

    • arala

      What about pc?

    • Brown

Olivier is right. Middle finger works.

    • anonymous

The game has an issue cause I have a gamer twitch but I still can’t get it. And I can keep my pick and jammer. Still l. I hope there is nothing portant in those boxes. Because it sucks all the fun right out of the game!

      • Olivier

there is no issue, it’s kinda tricky. You must grab the controller and hold firmly the left analog until it move. Do the same with the right analog. Keep it firmly. Use your middle finger (not the index since when you move rapidly the thumb will move a bit and you will lose the lock picking) and it should work.
I tried many times using my thumbs and my index, but my hand will always move my thumb a bit and I was not able to unlock it. Using the middle finger fix the issue, I always unlock the locks at my first or second shot.

    • Alex

best way button smash it. I had the same problem just tap it sonicly fast

    • Anonymous

It’s actually a timer since if you click the RT/R1 button fast enough then the slider will stop in the middle of moving to the left and the chest will open; so that slider is the time limit. When it reaches the far left then you have failed the lock.

      • Forsworn

        THANK YOU

      • Hein

I love you! Was at that thing forever….

    • Steph

I’m mashing RT and as I do it’s moving my sticks! Even if I get to the end of slider it still won’t open!! I give in ! Grrr

    • Beekzilla

I had the same thing but reall mashed the button and bingo 7500

    • Ryan

      Thank you, for that tip!

    • The real Sherlock Holmes

If you do not press anything it goes to the side of the slider anyway, it could probably be because the chests is too difficult. Either, press quickly or in rhythm to the ticking that sounds.

I have not figured out who of them is the right strategi. And it’s not R2, it’s R1 on the playstation 3 version,

      Sincerely
      The real Sherlock Holmes

    • eddie

for some reason i cant pick the lock on chests

      • jack

Same thing here. No matter how much I rotate the left analog stick both clockwise and anti clockwise, I never get to the tension angle.

    • Some guy

Has anybody else had the issue of when you’ve mashed the heck out f the rt/r2 button, that it doesn’t actually unlock?

      • http://segmentnext.com Absher Saleem

Do you keep the left and right sticks in the correct position while you press rt/r2 button? This is what may be causing you the problem.

        • randy

I am. but it still wont unlock it goes to the end of the slider then like it releases my lockpick out of the thing and i have to start again

          • Jacob

I’m having the exact same issue.

            • Mike

The best thing I can recommend is that you just pound on RT/R2.

When I started, I thought me pushing RT moved that little thing to the left, but it turns out its actually a timer. Just push RT/R2 as fast as possible and you’ll find more success.

      • Alex

Yea I’m getting the should be like no. 2 just boxs or at least have a shop where you could upgrade you’re pick locking equipment

        • skidd

The reason for this is that the slider bar stands for the time you have to pick the lock, your not pressing RT fast enough. I had the same problem and after a little fiddling I figured it out.

      • sPhinX

actually getting the tension angle is really easy..

just push ur L stick downwards , ur R stick upwards, and press RT fast enuf before the slider reaches the other end.
