Sony CEO: Pokemon Go Is A “Real Game-Changer”

According to Sony CEO Kaz Hirai Sony plans to aggressively enter the mobile game market and Pokemon Go is a real game changer.

Pokemon Go has been the biggest mobile game launch of this year and has brought in millions of dollars in revenue. So it does not come as a surprise that other companies think of the game as groundbreaking. Sony’s CEO thinks of Pokemon Go as a potential game changer for the mobile game industry.

Speaking with Financial Times, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai spoke about the company’s plans for the mobile game market and Pokemon Go. He said that Sony plans to aggressively enter the mobile game market and “It’s quite a shift from being just a console-based business to being on mobile phones as well”.

He further added that Pokemon Go is a game changer, as it has the ability to change how people move.

Pokemon Go is a real game-changer. I’m very interested in the fact that it has the potential to really change the way people move, literally.

He also added that Pokemon Go use of augmented reality to make it look like that Pokemon exists in the real world is an “innovative idea that’s going to lift all boats for the video game industry”. He also said that he would also like to see the implementation of augmented reality in Sony’s mobile games too.

Earlier this year Sony announced its mobile game division under Sony Interactive Entertainment. Sony is targeting the ever expanding mobile market with PlayStation’s intellectual properties, meaning we may see plenty of PlayStation games getting a mobile spin-off.

In other news, last week Niantic confirmed the Buddy System for Pokemon Go. According to the developers players will be able to choose a Pokemon from their collection that will become their buddy, and will open new in-game rewards and experience.

Do you agree with Sony CEO that the game is a potential game changer? Do you think Pokemon Go will stay relevant in coming months? Let us know in the comments.
