Much like Half-Life and Half-Life: Alyx, most fans of the Prince of Persia games don’t think of VR when they hear the series’ name. Ubisoft, however, has unveiled a Prince of Persia VR game called “The Dagger of Time”, an escape room game built for up to four players.
Escape rooms are nothing new in real life, and there’s been a number of different virtual reality games that have similar concepts to them, fitting for a genre where most games only last around an hour or so. A Prince of Persia version, however, is definitely a new concept.
There hasn’t been a true Prince of Persia game since The Forgotten Sands back in 2010, and since then Ubisoft has declared the franchise to be on “pause”. Now, however, it seems like the Prince of Persia VR game being developed could mean the series is unpaused.
In Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time, players must work together to escape various puzzle rooms in the Fortress of Time, making use of the titular Dagger of Time to help you solve the puzzles while also keeping an eye out for Kaileena, the Empress of Time, and her army of sand monsters.
Considering that a big part of the Prince of Persia games is puzzle solving, an escape room setup that relies on puzzle solving could help to play to the game’s strengths, especially if it involves using the dagger to freeze, speed up, or rewind time.
The developer of the Prince of Persia VR game, Ubisoft Düsseldorf, is no stranger to escape-room style VR games. Two others, both from the Assassin’s Creed series, have already been published by the same studio.
While we don’t know when Prince of Persia: The Dagger of Time will be releaed, we might get an actual official trailer from Ubisoft at some point in the future. Hopefully, along with the game being good, this will be the gateway to more Prince of Persia games coming in the future.
