Microsoft has been supporting its latest OS with new feature and fixes along with different versions of the OS too which are designed for a specific work environment and Windows 10 S is one such version of Windows 10 but, Microsoft is dropping the support for this OS.
Windows 10 S was rolled out last year as a competitor to Google’s Chrome OS. The OS was designed to be performance-centric, secure, and the only able to run apps through Windows Store. Microsoft has now decided to drop this standalone offering of Windows 10.
While Microsoft is discontinuing it, however, its secure and performance-centric functionalities are being introduced to Windows 10 Home, Pro, and Enterprise as Microsoft will be adding S Mode to Windows 10 Home, Pro and Enterprise versions.
Windows 10 S saw a limited release on Microsoft Surface Laptop and other budget laptops. The S mode for other the OS will bring the functionality of Windows 10 S, essentially locking out the 32 Bit side of the Operating System, essentially stopping Win32 apps from running on your PC.
However, an interesting rumor has been making rounds on the internet suggesting that Microsoft is working on new version of Win 10 codenamed “Polaris” that will essentially replace Windows 10 S.
Polaris somewhat follows the guidelines on the Win 10 S version and is a brand new version of Windows 10 for desktop PCs. This new version of Windows 10 is built upon the UWP which makes it “Microsoft’s first truly modern Windows OS for the traditional PC form factor”.
While the S Mode will provide the working environment of Win 10 S in Pro, Home, and Enterprise versions. The Polaris version will further improve the OS and will prioritize security and performance. In simple words, the Win 10 S will be changing the name.
