Is Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Going to Release on Steam?

Art director for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Joel Emslie, confirmed that the PC port of the game will release through Blizzard's Battle.net and not Steam

The hype train for Infinity Ward’s upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare keeps on getting momentum. As Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s release date draws closer, the game developers are revealing more information about the game. One of the most asked questions about Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is that will it release on Steam for PC, and if not, which distribution platform will the PC version release on? Here’s the answer.

Is Call of Duty Modern Warfare Coming to Steam?

In a 129 Rapid Fire Questions About Call of Duty: Modern Warfare video hosted by Game Informer, we learned a mountain of information about the game. Infinity Ward’s studio art director for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Joel Emslie, revealed a ton of critical information about the game. But perhaps one of the more interesting parts of the video was related to Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s distribution platform for the PC version.

When Joel Emsile was asked “If this game [Call of Duty: Modern Warfare] be on Battlenet?” he replied with a confirmation “Yes!” But then, the host asked for elaboration and asked if the game will only be on Battlenet. To which Emsile replied, “It will be on Battlenet.”

It is clear at this point that this is a topic Infinity Ward doesn’t want to reveal too much about. The game might eventually arrive on Steam but it seems like they don’t have any plans for it right now.

Battle.net is an online gaming, social networking, digital distribution, and digital rights management platform developed by Blizzard Entertainment. It is a direct competitor to Valve’s Steam. Of course, we all know how massively dominant Steam is in the gaming community with millions of players logging in daily.

This extremely huge user base is the reason why a lot of fans want Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s PC version to release via Steam. Granted, that would be extremely beneficial for the players as Steam has a ton of user-friendly features but Blizzard is the parent company of Activision Blizzard.

Since Activision is publishing Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, it makes sense that the PC port of the game would be published through Blizzard’s Battle.net platform. In fact, this is something that was clear from the get-go.

Ever since the first teaser for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare dropped, it was made clear that the PC version of the game would release via Blizzard’s Battle.net.

The title features a fully-optimized PC version, developed in partnership with Beenox, which will be available exclusively on Blizzard Battle.net®**, Blizzard Entertainment’s online gaming platform.

So there you have it. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s PC port will not (as of right now) release via Steam. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare’s PC port will be published through Blizzard’s Battle.net.

PC players can pre-order Call of Duty: Modern Warfare now on Blizzard Battle.net. The PC version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare is developed by Beenox alongside Infinity Ward.
