Industry insider Marcus Sellars has gone on Twitter saying that we’ll be seeing Madden and FIFA 19 on Switch this year, a year after FIFA 18 was ported over to the Switch several months after its release along with the other versions. Both games are two of EA’s biggest sports earners, so it’s no surprise.
FIFA 18 came out for the Nintendo Switch along with the versions for the Xbox One, Playstation 4, PC, and legacy consoles, but came out with a number of differences. These included the removal of the game’s “The Journey” story mode, but kept the career mode and the rest. It was also developed on an internal engine, rather than in Frostbite like the other versions of the game.
If we see Madden and FIFA 19 on Switch, and Sellars is correct, then hopefully both games can be put onto the Switch with the Frostbite engine to make it look even better than they would otherwise. While the Nintendo Switch version of FIFA 18 ran at 1080p resolution and 60 frames per second when it was docked, that was with its custom engine, so the Switch’s performance may suffer if it has to use Frostbite.
Either way, there’s also the puzzle of what would have to be cut from the original games, considering that the Switch version of FIFA 18 got its story mode cut in order to fit the game on the Switch. A similar thing might happen to Madden NFL 19 and FIFA 19, if EA decides to continue their new practice of putting story modes in their games. If they don’t, they may be able to fit the same amount of content into each game.
Either way, we’ll likely be seeing Madden and FIFA 19 on Switch this year, and we’ll probably get more information from EA on what all will actually be going into the games when they release.
