Halo is one of the biggest Xbox exclusives, however, developer 343 Industries has had a hard time recapturing the essence of the franchise with Halo 4 and Halo 5. But, the studio is determined to change all that and assured that Halo Infinite’s campaign is centered around “Hope”.
Halo games have always featured hope as the core of their campaigns. But, 343 Industries changed that a bit with Halo 4 and Halo 5 which were centered around Fear.
Now the developers have promised that Halo Infinite’s campaign is centered around hope, mystery, and wonder. This is according to narrative experiences director Dan Chosich.
At 343 we take time to look back at ourselves and Halo and how we’ve promoted Halo in the past. One thing we really looked at was how Halo has been marketed.
One thing we really wanted to change in coming out with Infinite was the perception. Instead of starting around fear like with Halo 4 and Halo 5, we really wanted to focus Infinite’s campaign around hope. We really wanted to have more hope, more mystery, more wonder, more agency, more heroism, and more symbolism in the trailer. We really wanted to focus on that feeling of being able to have a living world at your fingertips and to get back to what Halo 1 espoused.
So our next steps were how do we turn fear to hope. Our north star became: we wanted to leave the audience believing. That this is a place where players want to live in, explore, and fight for.
The Hope element is quite evident from the tone of the Halo Infinite reveal trailer. If 343 Industries can deliver on their promise then Halo has a chance to become the defining franchise for Xbox again.
Speaking of Halo Infinite, the studio also confirmed 4-player split-screen co-op. Split screen is a trademark Halo feature which was missing from Halo 5. Not only the studio is working to recapture the essence of Hope in Halo Infinite but, is also working to bring the series back to its roots.
Not only that, there won’t be any paid loot boxes in Halo Infinite. According to the studio, while they haven’t finalized monetization plans for the game but, paid loot boxes won’t be a part of those plans.
There are a lot of reasons for fans to be disappointed with Halo 5. One of them is the focus on Agent Locke instead of Master Chief. However, this won’t be the case with Halo Infinite. 343 Industries has confirmed that Halo: Infinite will focus on Master Chief.
Also, those wondering about if Halo Infinite is a spin-off or a sequel, the studio confirmed it to be a direct sequel to Halo 5. Furthermore, in the reveal trailer, Master Chief is on a Halo ring.
But, the trailer didn’t reveal which one and why. Fans have discovered that Halo Infinite will be set on Halo Zeta.
Halo Infinite is a first-person action shooter in development at 343 Industries. No release date has been announced for the game.
