So you want more news about God of War 5, yes? Well, there is plenty to talk about Sony Santa Monica’s next entry into the God of War series. Prior to the release of God of War PS4, it was already confirmed that the new God of War game is the first in a trilogy currently in development.
God of War is one of the crown jewels of Sony’s first-party line-up. The franchise started decades ago with PlayStation 2 and released its latest entry last year in the form of a redesigned God of War PS4.
From camera angles to story everything was changed and redesigned. Kratos stepped away from his Greek roots and stepped into the Norse Mythology. Well, he had to since all of the Gods were no longer in existence thanks to the God of War himself.
Sony’s God of War franchise is leading the single player games in the charge against live service titles. And while Sony is looking to create live service games as well, single-player story games will remain the primary focus of the company.
The next God of War game is going to be as amazing as the last entry into the series.
God of War 5 Release Date, Story Details, DLC, Norse Mythology, Trailer, And More
Sony Santa Monica is currently in the process of creating the next God of War game. The game is highly unlikely to release on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 Pro. God of War 5 is definitely a next-gen game that is expected to release on PlayStation 5 and probably a PlayStation 5 Pro if Sony keeps its mid-gen console updates going.
While the title is coming to PS5, director Cory Barlog isn’t really looking forward to creating a next-gen God of War game. He stated that working on a next-gen console requires a lot of work and it’s time-consuming to overhaul the engine for a new platform.
But Sony is going to push Sony Santa Monica to release the game on PS5 which means it could take longer than some may expect to finish the game.
Game Already in Development, Motion Capture Started?
Obviously, the biggest question is that whether the game is in development or not? Well it turns out that Sony Santa Monica has apparently started the motion capture for the next God of War game. The narrative animator of of God of War shared the following tweet:
Feels good to be back in the suit.? @SonySantaMonica pic.twitter.com/JlfnZB1r8Q
— ˗ˏˋKim Newmanˊˎ˗ (@KimboSlasher) January 10, 2020
As you can see that there is a motion capture suit. Well since there is no God of War DLC planned, it may very well be for God of War 5. If it’s the start of the motion capture, there is a great possibility that it may not be the launch title for PlayStation 5.
Update: Ragnarok Is Coming
Game director Cory Barlog has teased God of War 5 via a series of Tweets. The posts were made back in April but no one was able to pick up on it until now. The direct posted a series of Tweet and the first letter of each Tweet spelled “Ragnarok is Coming.” This is the same message that was hidden in the PS4 dynamic theme. We discuss previous tease below and how it may all tie into God of War 5 aka God of War Ragnarok.
To summarize what it could mean, Ragnarok is the end of times in the Norse Mythology and if you played God of War 4 you know by now that Kratos and Atreus triggered the apocalypse.
The end is near but the next game won’t be it. God of War reboot is a trilogy so expect God of War 6 to wrap things up. It would be interesting to see if God of War 6 will end Kratos’ story or if he will move to another mythology. You can read more about the possible story and characters of God of War 5 below.
God of War 5 Story Details and Possible Main Villain
Note: From here on there are story spoilers for God of War PS4 that released in 2018. If you haven’t played the game yet, skip to the release date section of the article to continue knowing more about God of War PS5.
Kratos will continue his journey with Atreus right where he left off in God of War PS4. He will continue to explore the Norse realms to find more Gods to kill. But this time, he isn’t looking for a fight, unlike previous games. He is just trying to survive and protect his son and it is the Norse Gods who wish to pick a fight with him.
But to be fair, at this point Kratos has given them plenty of reasons to come at him. Kratos killed Thor’s two sons that stood in his way. At the end of God of War, we see Atreus get a vision of the future where Thor himself comes to his doorstep to avenge his sons.
Not to mention, Freya, the mother of Baldur is not happy with Kratos killing her beloved son. This also gives Odin, the father of Baldur, a reason to come after Kratos and Atreus.
But this isn’t the only reason Thor and Odin wish to take down Kratos and his son Atreus. Along their journey, this father and son unintentionally triggered Ragnarok. There is a theory that Atreus’ mother, a Giant, knew what will happen and foresaw the future prior to her death. She deliberately planned to send her husband and son to the highest peak in the realm, knowing well that they both will unknowingly trigger Ragnarok, the end of times for all of the 9 realms.
The main villains of the game are expected to be Thor, Odin, and Freya. Along the way, there will be more enemies but we can not know until the game actually comes out, which brings us to the question, when does it come out?
God of War 5 Release Date, Trailer, and Announcement
God of War will not be announced at E3 2019 this year but we can be pretty certain that it will be present at E3 2020 or PlayStation Experience 2020 as a PlayStation 5 game.
PlayStation 5 is expected to be teased or even properly announced at PlayStation Experience 2019. Sony is skipping E3 2019 which puts a lot of hype and expectations into PSX 2019.
God of War release date is set somewhere in mid-2021 after its trailer reveal and announcement in 2020. All of this is speculation but knowing how Sony and Sony Santa Monica operate, it is pretty safe to speculate and possibly figure out the game’s release date and announcement plans.
God of War 5 Officially Teased By Sony Santa Monica
God of War 5 is officially teased by Sony Santa Monica via the latest God of War PS4 theme. Sony Santa Monica released a theme for PS4 and as spotted by an eagle-eyed Reddit user, it features a hidden teaser for things to come. As we speculated above, “Ragnarok is coming.”
The theme released on the first anniversary of God of War. The background theme features our God of War Kratos and his son Atreus on a boat. Small Nordic ruins are etched on the side of the boat. After tinkering with the image a bit, one can see that the markings translate to “Ragnarok is coming.”
Kratos and Atreus have triggered Ragnarok, the end of times in the Norse mythology. The next God of War game will revolve around the beginning of the end and if the ending of God of War PS4 is any indication, Thor is the big bad in God of War 5.
The rebooted GOW series is a trilogy so the story won’t end with God of War 5. Once Thor is defeated, Kratos is likely to move on to Odin. The most powerful Norse God is mentioned in God of War PS4 multiple times.
God of War 6 will be the final entry in the trilogy. Whether the story of Kratos will continue from there remains to be seen.
Raising Kratos – The Creation of God of War
If you can spare two hours of your time, God of War creator Sony Santa Monica has an in-depth documentary about the creation of God of War reboot. Raising Kratos is a feature film that follows the five-year-long challenging development of God of War PS4.
It is free to watch a film that is now live on YouTube and is worth the watch if you played the game and are looking for to God of War 5 for next-generation PlayStation.
Raising Kratos documents the five-year, herculean effort to reinvent one of the greatest stories in gaming, God of War. Facing an unknown future, Santa Monica Studio took a massive risk, fundamentally changing their beloved franchise and re-establishing their rightful place in video game history. More than just a “making of,” this cinematic journey of second chances rooted in family, sacrifice, struggle and doubt follows game director Cory Barlog and those who chase perfection in art and storytelling. Witness the incredible defeats, the unpredictable outcomes and the down-to-the-wire tension on full display in this true-life redemption story.
The film gives us an important insight into the development struggles and the sacrifices made by the team to finish the game.
The 10 Million Sales Milestone
God of War 4 has reached 10 million in total sales on PS4. The game has proved to be a major success for Sony and Sony Santa Monica. Sony Entertainment President and CEO Jim Ryan shared the news that God of War hs joined the exclusive 10 million club. Only two PS4 exclusive games ever crossed that number before God of War – Uncharted 4 and The Last of Us Remastered.
God of War 4 selling like hot cakes should further solidify Sony’s faith in God of War reboot. It would make business sense now to put more resources into God of War 5.
