Every Single Death in Avengers: Infinity War Has Purpose

When it came to balancing the universe, the screenwriters did not randomly choose characters for death in Avengers: Infinity War.

Speaking with ComicBook in a recent interview, directors Anthony and Joe Russo revealed that the decision-making process was based on the storylines, including those that have already been told in the past and those that are yet to be told in the future

“Joe and I can’t go into too much detail because we’re not gonna talk about where the story goes from here,” said Anthony Russo. “All of our choices are based on story. It’s based upon the road that these characters have traveled, in not only this movie, but throughout the entire MCU up to this point because, again, these movies are the culmination. So all we can say is that they are very focused story choices.”

However, it was never easy to inform the cast about the deaths of their respective characters. They have been part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for nearly a decade but had to succumb to the storytelling in the end.

“They’re never easy conversations to have with people,” said Joe Russo. “But I think that people are understanding that the story comes first and a lot of these people have really amazing careers and lots of films that they want to make so, ultimately, I think they go through a grieving process like anyone but you come out the other side at some point and understand what being part of the Marvel Universe did for you.”

It has been more than a week since Avengers: Infinity War was released in theaters. Hence, there is no reason to wave a spoiler flag when it comes to discussing the plot.

Thanos managed to obtain all of the Infinity Stones and snapped his fingers to turn half of all life in the universe to dust. This meant the death of more than a dozen characters, both major and minor. There are some who are pretty much destined to return, such as Gamora. Then there are those who will not, such as Heimdall and others.

Avengers: Infinity War is now running in theaters worldwide and will open in China on May 11. The untitled sequel, presently dubbed Avengers 4, is slated to premiere on May 3, 2019.
