Director Yui Tanimura Talks About All the Covenants in Dark Souls 2

Dark Souls 2 Covenants get discussed by Yui Tanimura, the game director; pose more importance in the game.

There’s still time in the release of From Software’s open world RPG, Dark Souls 2. March 11, 2014 is the date when you will actually be able to experience the game but here’s something else for you to munch on.

We already know that Covenants will reappear in Dark Souls 2; what’s new is that certain new covenants will be introduced into the game along with some of the returning ones.

Dark Souls 2 director, Yui Tanimura was talking to the Japanese magazine Famitsu when he shared information about new and returning Dark Souls 2 Covenants.

Now I am no expert on the Japanese language, but I have been able to decipher some of it. A total of five covenants have been reported namely:

  • Blood Brothers
  • Covenant of Blue
  • Blue Guardian/ Protector of Blue
  • Successor of the Sun
  • Guardian of Bell/ Kanemori

From what I can make out of it, in the Guardian of Bell, a pair of bells is located somewhere and you pledge to protect them.

If other players enter the area of the bells they are directly intruding your world and you are supposed to put them down.

The Successor of the Sun works similar to Warrior of the Sun from Dark Souls. It involves a usual White spirit body and when you connect the pledge, the summons and Rei-tai sine get colored in Golden as seen in the screenshots.

If dark spirits invade you, the Covenant of Blue automatically summons help that comes in the shape of another player with a mission to fight-off the invaders. If the host is killed, it results in a mission failure.

You can also invade as revenge spirits into the world of other players. The Guardian of the Blue on the other hand protects you from the invasions of the Covenant of Blue.

Lastly, Brotherhood of Blood is similar to Dark Souls’ Bloodwraith, you invade the worlds of other players as you desire. Only this time, it will be much tougher to do so because of the presence of the Guardians of Blue covenant that protects other covenants.

What I am looking at is a greater level of focus on Pledges and hence Covenants, making the gameplay far more immersive and challenging at the same time. Have a look at the screens and tell us what you make of them.
