Cross-Platform Play is an interesting topic since Sony Interactive Entertainment doesn’t want to do anything with it and on the other hand, Microsoft supporting it. However, with Sony not willing to embrace Cross-Play it seems that Microsoft is trying to convince them otherwise.
Speaking with Gamereactor at Gamescom 2017, head of marketing at Xbox, Aaron Greenberg was asked if Microsoft is discussing the possibility of Cross-Platform Play with Sony to which Greenberg responded that Microsoft is currently in talks with Sony on the matter.
Absolutely, yeah. We’re talking to Sony [about crossplay], we do partner with them on Minecraft and of course we would like to enable them to be part of that; one community, to unite gamers. So we’re talking to them and we’re hopeful that they’ll be supportive of it.
While Greenberg didn’t go into specifics but, this response will come as a sigh of relief for those who are looking forward to enjoying Cross-Platform Play between Xbox and PlayStation.
There are many developers in the industry that are looking to introduce Cross-Play for both platforms but, Sony won’t allow it. The most reason example of this is Ark Survival Evolved, whose developer revealed that Sony won’t allow Cross-play for the game.
The reason why Sony won’t allow Cross-Play is that the company sees it as a security threat for its console and PSN and Microsoft is quite critical of Sony’s logic behind not allowing it. According to Xbox head, Phil Spencer, the argument Sony is presenting is not healthy for the game industry. He added that user security is among Microsoft’s the top priorities.
We are hopeful that sooner or later Sony will see the potential of Cross-Play and will allow players to play multiplayer games with players on other platforms.
What games do you think or hope will get Cross Play functionality across both platforms? Let us know in the comments.
