Blizzard Explains the Lack of Details for Saving Highlights in Overwatch

The community has for long been requesting Blizzard to release an official “Saving Highlights” feature in order to share their precious Overwatch moments.

Last year, the developer confirmed that it was working on both Saving Highlights and Saving Replays; where the former deals with Play of the Game and the latter with the entire game. However, the information stream has been less than satisfactory. With Overwatch due to celebrate its first anniversary this month, questions have once again been raised about the status of development.

Responding to a thread on the official forums, game director Jeff Kaplan stated that the development team has been focusing most of its time in creating events such as Overwatch Uprising. However, with its conclusion, Blizzard is now shifting gears to specifically finish up the Saving Highlights feature.

“This is the current focus of the feature team (one of the smaller development strike teams on the Overwatch team),” wrote Kaplan. “The team is working extremely hard on this and has been for months. Expect more details early this summer.”

The statement confirms a previous promise that the ability to save would arrive before the inauguration of the Overwatch League.

Last month, the developer revealed its intentions to improve the game’s Play of the Game system to identify skillful gameplay that is often ignored by the current version. The first step, though, is bringing out the saving feature.

There is no confirmation as to whether Blizzard intends to roll both saving features into one neat package. The prospect, while exciting, is unlikely. Saving Highlights is potentially going to arrive before the ability to save replays of entire games.

Blizzard has been on a roll as of late, taking into consideration feedback from the community. Most recently, it noted the request of adding more crosshair customization options in the future.
