Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok Release Details, Plot, Setting, Regions

Another possible leak about the supposed upcoming Assassin's Creed game Assassin's Creed Ragnarok has come out giving out plot details and more.

Another supposed leak about Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok, reputedly the next Assassin’s Creed game from Ubisoft, has hit the web, bringing up more details. While we know nothing about the game so far, there’s a good bit of detail in all of these different leaks to form some sort of picture.

Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok takes us out of the rest of Europe, where we’ve been for the past two games in Assassin’s Creed Origins and Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Instead, according to what information we’ve gotten and the title, we’ll be heading to the North Sea, the land of Vikings and Saxons.

If the game is similar to the style of the previous two games in the series, we’ll be seeing a massive world to explore and most likely more god-related antics from Those Who Came Before, much like the recently-concluded Atlantis DLC for Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. But now let’s get into the nitty-gritty of all of the different details.

Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok Plot, Setting, Regions

From what the leaks have been able to tell us, Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok will be taking us all around the North Sea, which means that we’ll not only be in Scandanavia, the Viking homelands, but also the British Isles, which the Vikings raided and invaded multiple times over the course of history.

According to the leaks, various regions that we’ll be able to see in the game include Denmark, the southern portion of Sweden, Norway, and parts of Ireland and England. However, the main political scene will be in the British Isles.

Around this point in history, the country that is now England was divided up into a number of different petty kingdoms that these days are known as the Heptarchy, including places like Wessex, Mercia, Kent, East Anglia, Northumbria, and more. Many of these kingdoms were conquered by the invasion of the Great Heathen Army, a massive invasion of Vikings that occupied land and created a kingdom known as the “Danelaw.”

While the game will be apparently taking place in the early 1000s, meaning the Danelaw will likely no longer exist, the Vikings did still have an influence in English politics for a while. During William the Conqueror’s invasion in 1066, for instance, Norsemen under Harald Hadrada attempted to take the English throne for themselves, only for Hardrada to die in battle with Harold Godwinson, the then-king of England.

Various characters from Ireland’s history with the Vikings will also be seen, with the High King Brian Boru being a major story character. Despite his country’s hostile history with the Norse, he forms a bond with the protagonist, assuming a father-like role.

Exactly what the game’s plot will be remains to be seen, but with all of the different regions we have as options, hopefully there will be an enormous amount of content to look at, both in terms of story missions that take us there, and various sidequests.

Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok Gameplay, Quests

For the past two Assassin’s Creed games, players have been thrust into a game that’s more like an RPG than a conventional Assassin’s Creed game. Enemies now have levels and various quests and loot, more so than the early Assassin’s Creed games that didn’t have such things. The leaks also point out things like this.

According to said leak, Ragnarok’s gameplay will be similar to the single-player character setup of the older entries in the series, and there will only be one playable character, rather than the male/female alternatives that were in Assassin’s Creed Odyssey. Players will be taking on the role of a Danish Viking.

While this doesn’t necessarily confirm whether or not Ragnarok will keep the RPG mechanics, it does mean that we’ll only have one character to focus on now. Considering that Odyssey players favored Alexios over Kassandra, players likely made the decision themselves for only really playing one character more than the other.

We do know, at least, from the leaks, that there will still be quests, and gods and folklore will still be a part of the game. The dev that the various leaks came from made mention of one of his favorite quests, where a seemingly simple job to get children out of a well goes into an exploration of Celtic folklore. In Norway, a climb up a mountain results in the player character seeing a vision of Odin.

Assassin’s Creed Ragnarok Release Date

Considering that the game hasn’t even been announced yet (and, indeed, we don’t even know if the game is real), it’s likely still going to be a pretty long time until we actually end up learning anything new about the game. While Assassin’s Creed Origins was leaked almost immediately before it was announced, that hasn’t happened with Ragnarok.

Ubisoft also didn’t have any Assassin’s Creed game to announce at E3 2019, as most of their own conference was taken up with debuting Watch Dogs 3 and Ghost Recon Breakpoint. If we want a new Assassin’s Creed game to be announced, we’ll likely have to wait until either The Game Awards in December, or E3 2020 next year.
