Sony and Square Enix have a great working relationship which is going continue with PS5. According to a new leak, a new PS5 game is in development at Square Enix and Luminous Productions, a studio owned by Square Enix.
If we look at the LinkedIn profile of Tomohiro Tokoro, a 3D graphics director, and 3D character model lead of the studio, we can see that he is working on a new AAA video game for PS5.
The profile has been updated to remove the mention of this PS5 title. However, keen-eyed gamers were able to spot it before Tokoro removed it.
Tokoro has worked on Final Fantasy XV and Final Fantasy XIII. This new project is in development at a relatively new studio formed earlier this year.
It seems one of their very first projects is going to be a AAA PS5 game. What would be interesting to see is if this is a new IP or an installment for an established franchise.
The console itself is yet to be announced but we are hearing rumors, plenty of them actually. A recent report claimed that Sony canceled PlayStation Experience to keep major announcements for E3, including PS5. There are many PS5 games in development, most of them cross-gen, and Sony reportedly wanted to announce new projects alongside PS5.
PS5 with its VR integration and backward compatibility will be announced soon. Since last year, analysts predicted a 2021 release but it seems Sony is planning to release its product earlier than expected. A 2019 announcement would point to a Fall 2020 release window.
On the other hand, Microsoft held back major announcements from XO18. Many speculate that this move points to a jam-packed E3 2019 press event from Microsoft. Xbox Scarlett is rumored to appear at the event as well. It seems both companies are keeping their cards close to their chests for the time being.
Some of the games that are pretty much confirmed for PS5 and Xbox Scarlett include Death Stranding, Halo Infinite, Starfield, The Elder Scrolls 6, Red Dead Redemption 2 remaster, The Last of Us 2.
We recently spoke with Techland, the creator of Dying Light 2 about its wishlist for PS5 and Xbox Scarlett. Lead designer Tymon Smektala stated:
Less hassle, more power. And something that in my personal opinion wasn’t really delivered this generation yet: something genuinely new and unique. Most of the big budget games we received this gen were “just” better, more polished version of the formulas and formats we knew from PS3/X360 era.
