Contra Director Nobuya Nakazato Explains Why it Took a Decade to Return

Contra is an iconic franchise but over the years it faded away. The originals from NES and SNES days are still fresh in our heads. The last time we saw a mainline Contra game was 10-years ago but in 24 hours, this adored IP is making a come back in the form of Contra: Rogue Corps. But why did it take a decade for Contra to return?

Speaking with Nintendoeveryting at the Tokyo Game Show, Contra director of Nobuya Nakazato explained why it took so long.

Nakazato worked on Contra for 20-years and he is the one who pushed to bring back Contra but “it was very hard to kick-off.”

It was very hard to kick off the project just because we needed to find the right kind of momentum and timing. Obviously I really wanted to make another Contra game. I’ve been really pushing – I just couldn’t find the right push, and couldn’t get approval for such a project to do it out of the blue.

Also, one of the difficult things is finding the right team to work on such a game, and even just the staff and resources we have at the time, but what really pushed forward with the project was… one of the things that was very memorable to me was working on Contra games, and I know the series well, and so I figured who else would be worthy to create the next Contra game? And that’s why I wanted to contribute all of my talent and history on the series and make it come to life.

Contra: Rogue Corps is set two years after Alien Wars. The game features local and online co-op for up to 4-players. There are 4-playable characters, each with its own unique style and personality.  There are over 100 weapons in Contra: Rogue Corps. and detailed customization options.
