Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Metroidvania Gameplay Hides Beneath Linear E3 Experience

Apparently we didn’t see everything that Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order could do when EA Play came around earlier this month. A Twitter post directed at Kotaku writer Jason Schreier informed him that a Respawn insider said that there’s actually Fallen Order Metroidvania gameplay hidden beneath the E3 demo’s more linear surface.

According to the leak, the game relies on players giving protagonist Cal Kestis new powers and abilities in order to unlock the entirety of various areas across the galaxy. And how do they do this? Via the starship that you can see in the game’s reveal trailer.

This ship, and its crew, will be Cal’s way of getting around the galaxy as he fights to escape the Empire’s attention. While you can finish segments of the story on a planet that you visit, getting new abilities will unlock new areas on those planets that you can then revisit.

Why exactly EA and Respawn would choose a more linear segment of the game over showing off the open-world remains to be seen, whether it was due to time on their EA Play segment or if they wanted to keep that kind of gameplay under wraps.

Respawn is no stranger to making open-ended single player games. Titanfall 2, though also with a linear storyline, still had a variety of wide-open levels. While not really comparable to the Fallen Order Metroidvania gameplay, Respawn did get a lot of praise for Titanfall 2’s campaign.

At the same time, Fallen Order’s gameplay in general is extremely different from the Titanfall series, being a third-person melee action game instead of a first-person shooter. While many people are confident that Respawn can pull off a great game, we still have to wait until November 15 and see just how the game comes out.

Otherwise, you can look on Game Informer’s website at its expose of Fallen Order, which will be coming later in July and will likely end up revealing more about the game that we didn’t get to see at E3.

You’ll be able to play the Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order Metroidvania gameplay when the game comes out on the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC on November 15.
