Nintendo’s E3 2019 Direct Livestream happened a few days ago, we got to see games like Luigi’s Mansion 3, The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance, and The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening. Fans were looking forward to seeing Bayonetta 3 make an appearance as well but that didn’t happen. Despite being absent from E3 2019, Platinum Games says development on Bayonetta 3 is going well.
Bayonetta 3 which was announced as a Nintendo Switch exclusive at the 2017 Game Awards. Since then, The Japanese video game developer Platinum Games mostly has been silent about the game. Fans were looking forward to seeing Bayonetta 3 make an appearance at E3 2019 but that never happened.
When asked about Bayonetta 3’s absence from E3 2019, studio head Atsushi Inaba told Video Games Chronicle:
Games aren’t usually done in a year or two… it takes a while. That’s all. Things are going well and I know a lot of people are asking for it.
He also spoke about the game’s absence from E3 2019 by saying:
Giving updates for everything at E3 isn’t the smartest PR strategy to begin with,” he added. “So just because we’re not showing it here doesn’t mean [Beyonetta 3’s development] is not going well.
It has almost been 18 months since we got to see a proper Bayonetta 3 trailer. Sure, we got a few rumors here and there but not anything that can be classified as a proper Bayonetta 3 reveal. When asked about the studio’s silence regarding Bayonetta 3, Inaba replied:
Yes, it’s going to be a high-quality title and we’re putting our all into it. That is what you’re seeing [with the silence].
In previous interviews, PlatinumGames has spoken about how Bayonetta 3’s development process is different from previous entries.
Back in May, Inaba said:
“With Bayonetta 1 and 2 we had basically an orthodox development process, at least for us,” he told VGC. “We did stage one, then stage two, then stage three and built up the drama and the pacing chronologically.
“For Bayonetta 3, we can say that we learned enough from making the past two games to change our process in a way that’s different to what I just described.”
Of course, this makes sense. The only way to keep things fresh is to take a new approach with a game’s development. But this isn’t the first time PlatinumGames has reassured everyone by saying Bayonetta 3’s development is “going well”.
During an event at Bitsummit Roadshow in September 2018, studio heads said this:
“[It’s] nice to be able to tell you that everything is going very, very well. We’re all very excited about what we’re doing on that game.”
Earlier this year, Nintendo’s Senior Product Marketing Manager, Bill Trinen, confirmed that Bayonetta 3 release date would be in 2019.
“Bayonetta 3 is still in the works…and of course, that’s another game that’s maybe coming a little bit sooner than people anticipated. Later this year,” Trinen said.
On the other hand, a report suggested that Bayonetta 3 won’t release in 2019 and instead will have a 2020 release date.
Despite Platinum Games’ assurance regarding Bayonetta 3’s development going well, there still is a chance for a delay. E3 2019 is one of the biggest events of the year and it happens in the middle of the year. If Bayonetta 3 has a release date for 2019, it would make sense for it to make an appearance this close to a possible release date.
I guess the only thing fans can do is to take PlatinumGames’ word for it and wait till they’re ready to give more information about Bayonetta 3 and its release date.
Bayonetta 3 Nintendo Switch is being developed by PlatinumGames and being published by Nintendo exclusively for the Nintendo Switch. Release Date for Bayonetta 3 hasn’t been confirmed yet but we are expecting it to be a 2020 release.
