A recent leak on the website ResetEra has revealed the possible existence of the Destiny 2 Shadowkeeper expansion, which will take us back to Earth’s moon to once again fight the Hive on their home turf. If it’s true, we’ll likely get an announcement about Shadowkeeper at this year’s E3 conference.
The leak comes from datamined PC files, and Jason Schreier of Kotaku has claimed that the leak is legitimate and Shadowkeeper does, in fact, exist. However, we still can’t know for sure until Destiny appears at E3 and Bungie reveals it themselves.
It’s been a long while since Destiny players were able to return to the Moon, as the game has limited us to Nessus, Titan, and Io, along with new areas like the Tangled Shore, the European Dead Zone, Mars’s north pole, and the Dreaming City.
Being able to go back to the moon in the Destiny 2 Shadowkeeper expansion will likely allow us to explore a whole new area of the planet and the Hellmouth, the vast underground fortress of the Hive that players were able to explore back in the original Destiny.
The description of Shadowkeeper claims that players will be returning to the Moon and delving deep into the Hellmouth, and allow us to become a “slayer of nightmares”, though it has yet to elaborate on what that is.
Previously, players have journeyed deep into the Hellmouth to slay Crota, the son of Oryx, the Taken King, in one of Destiny’s raids. However, a huge portion of the Hellmouth is still unexplored, so this will be a good opportunity to expose us to new creatures inside it.
We don’t currently know the release date of the Destiny 2 Shadowkeeper expansion, but hopefully we won’t have very long to wait now that the game’s Season of Opulence has begun. Either way, keep an eye out for the expansion to be revealed at E3 this year.
