EA to Continue Making Star Wars Games Following the Cancellation of Project Orca

EA says that it's still fully committed to make new Star Wars games and content following the cancellation of its open world game.

Star Wars is one of the most beloved franchises in the entertainment and gaming industry. The recent cancellation of open world Star Wars game by EA left many fans disappointed. To calm the fans, EA says that it’s still fully committed to making Star Wars games following the cancellation of its open world game.

This news about the cancellation of open world Star Wars game by EA was reported by Kotaku recently. Three anonymous sources told Kotaku that EA Vancouver is now canceling its open-world Star Wars game which was codenamed “Orca”.

This open-world Star Wars game code-named “Orca” was in development since 2017. This project was previously called Ragtag and was in development by Visceral Games and headed by Amy Hennig. But unfortunately, things didn’t work out well so EA Vancouver took over after the shutdown of Visceral Games games.

According to Kotaku, EA Vancouver canceled this open-world Star Wars game in favor to release a new game sooner than the planned release date of Orca.

This new project is expected to release sometime in 2020. Variety got the opportunity to ask EA about the current rumors of this game cancellation.

Though EA didn’t confirm directly that they have canceled this project. Instead, EA said that they will continue to work on future Star Wars projects. According to EA:

As a natural part of the creative process, the great work by our team in Vancouver continues and will evolve into future ‘Star Wars’ content and games. We’re fully committed to making more ‘Star Wars’ games, we’re very excited about ‘Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order’ from Respawn, and we’ll share more about our new projects when the time is right. There’s been speculation overnight about one of our ‘Star Wars’ projects.

EA was also asked about their license deal with Dinsey but they decided to not talk about it. This is because many fans were left disappointed with EA’s deal with Disney to work on Star Wars game. There’s an ongoing 10-year contract between EA and Disney.

The contract between EA and Disney was signed about 6 years ago. In that period of time, EA has managed to release three Star Wars game.

These games include one for mobile devices and one that received one of the worst reviews ever that is Star Wars: Battlefront 2. Star Wars: Battlefront 2 was a big flop due to EA’s massive use of microtransactions in it.

Disney does have the ability to cancel its contract with EA due to their failure to deliver what they promised. It will be interesting to see what happens in the future. Probably this is why EA has decided to cancel this Orca project to release games sooner and to satisfy Disney and the fans.

Anyways, the good news is that Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order is still in works. Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order is in development by Respawn Entertainment and we have high hopes for it.

Respawn Entertainment is known for its Titanfall games which I personally like a lot. Star Wars Jedi Fallen Order is expected to release sometime in 2019 before the new Star Wars project that EA has turned towards recently.
