Even though it’s been less than a month since Super Smash Bros Ultimate released, Super Smash Bros Ultimate sales have surpassed the sales of every other game in the series in Japan’s retail. The game also overtook Super Smash Bros for Wii U’s sales over three years in that same span of time.
Super Smash Bros Ultimate lives up to its name in terms of content. Including over 70 fighters, along with hundreds of different stages and music tracks, Ultimate includes every single piece of content from the games that have come before it, even adding in characters that the Wii U and 3DS version had to omit, such as the Ice Climbers.
However, old characters weren’t the only things that made people excited about Super Smash Bros Ultimate; there were a number of new characters as well, including Simon and Richter Belmont from Castlevania, Isabelle from Animal Crossing, Incineroar from Pokemon, and even Mario’s Pirahna Plant.
Other characters will also be coming via DLC, including Joker, the protagonist of Persona 5, which was announced at the Game Awards in 2018. Four others will be coming at some point in the future, but who knows what ones will be coming to the game, especially with all of the curve balls Ultimate has thrown at us before.
The Super Smash Bros Ultimate sales being so high likely aren’t limited to retail sales, either, especially in Japan. With the rising prominence of digital sales, there’s also a huge possibility that they’re higher than the other Super Smash Bros games that you’ve been able to buy digitally. It’s likely that at least three million copies of the game have been sold digitally.
