The AMD Threadripper 2990WX is the top of the line CPU that AMD is offering in the second generation of AMD Threadriper. The CPU comes with 32 cores and 64 threads and that is a lot of resources keeping in mind that the CPU is very competitively priced as compared to what Intel has to offer and from what we have seen so far, the upcoming generation of CPUs will come with a max of 24 cores.
Alva Jonathan aka Lucky_N00b was able to get the AMD Threadripper 2990WX to 5.4 GHz using LN2 cooling. Using LN2 cooling the CPU was kept at -184C. The CPU was paired with the MSI X399 MEG Creation using a custom LN2 BIOS and 16GB of DDR.
You can imagine that a 32 core CPU overclocked to 5.4 GHz would use a lot of power and you would be right in thinking so. The whole system pulled 1200W from the wall according to some reports. Stay tuned for more information regarding the matter.
Furthermore, AMD has also announced the AMD Radeon Pro WX 8200 and AMD claims that this is among the best workstation graphics cards under $1000. AMD is claiming to provide great value for money and while that is the case, Nvidia has dominated the market overall.
Nivida next-generation graphics cards are around the corner and it will be interesting to see what kind of performance these upcoming graphics cards will have to offer as compared to the competition as well as the current generation of graphics cards from Nvidia. Whatever the case is, AMD is dominating the CPU space and bringing the pressure on Intel. While AMD has not been as successful in the GPU space, it is not giving up and that is a good sign.
