Nvidia graphics cards especially Pascal graphics cards have been incredibly successful and have sold millions of units and with the Meltdown and Spectre bugs becoming common knowledge I am sure that people are wondering whether these have been affected or not. If they are affected then how much of a hit are these Nvidia graphics cards taking.
Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang talked about the issue and said that people need not worry as Nvidia GPUs are not affected by the Meltdown and Spectre bugs at all. The following is what he had to say in this regard:
Our GPUs are immune, they’re not affected by these security issues. What we did is we released driver updates to patch the CPU security vulnerability. We are patching the CPU vulnerability the same way that Amazon, the same way that SAP, the same way that Microsoft, etc are patching, because we have software as well.”
It must be a relief to all the people that have bought an Nvidia graphics card that they will see no performance degradation what so ever. While companies are busy patching the issue Huang is certain that Nvidia GPUs are not affected by this bug and that the company will not be patching anything. Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang further went on to say:
“I am absolutely certain that our GPU is not affected,”
These are big words of confidence from the CEO and while we hope that these claims are true we are going to wait a bit longer before taking these words to heart. Clearly, the Meltdown and Spectre bugs to not impact gaming performance but what about other applications? That we have yet to see.
Let us know what you think about this statement regarding Nvidia graphics cards not being affected by Meltdown and Spectre bugs and whether or not you have noticed any kind of performance degradation since the bug became common knowledge.
