The latest entry in the Deus Ex franchise, Deus Ex Mankind Divided, might not have performed well according to Square Enix’s expectations, however, the company has no intention of abandoning the franchise and plans to continue the series but, it will have to wait a bit.
Speaking with Game Industry, Square Enix CEO Yosuke Matsuda clarified that the company never said “anything about discontinuing that title but for some reason that’s the rumor out on the market”.
He further added that Eidos Montreal and Square Enix itself do not have unlimited resources and given that the studios are working on a few titles with Eidos working on Avengers game based on Marvel Comics, it will be a while before we get to see another game in the Deus Ex franchise.
What I can say is Eidos Montreal has always developed Deus Ex, and the issue is we do not have limitless resources. We have several big titles that we work with and that’s partly a factor in what our line-up looks like. Of course, it would be ideal if we could work on all of them all of the time, but the fact of the matter is some titles have to wait their turn. The reason there isn’t a Deus Ex right now is just a product of our development line-up because there are other titles we are working on.
Speaking of resources, this is the exact reason why Square Enix let go of Hitman IP. According to Matsuda, the company could not support Hitman franchise in terms of allocating development resources and without the investment, the company would have ruined the franchise.
However, a report made its way on the internet earlier this year suggesting that Deus Ex Mankind Divided sequel is still in progress and is apparently in the works.
