Super Mario Odyssey Scaling Changes Between Docked and Handheld Modes
Nintendo’s Super Mario Odyssey is one of the biggest and most-anticipated games coming up in the next year, and players will be able to take it anywhere on the Nintendo Switch. But how exactly will Super Mario Odyssey scaling change between the handheld mode and the docked mode in play?
Considering all of the enormous different worlds that players will be able to wander around, the Nintendo Switch is going to be working hard to make the game continue to run well. While the Nintendo Switch already had an absolutely enormous game in the form of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, the massive land of Hyrule the multiple large lands and levels of Super Mario Odyssey might be more difficult.
Super Mario Odyssey scaling will mainly follow the same pattern as other Nintendo Switch games, as they will run at 900p resolution when they’re docked to the console, and at 720p when they’re in their handheld mode. This also impacts things like lighting and anti-aliasing, and the bloom lighting causes vertical bands that are absent in the docked version.
All of the lighting decreases in the handheld version have also affected shadows. The shadows in the handheld version of Super Mario Odyssey will be much blurrier and more obviously aliased. Various things like this are apparently an occurrence across the various worlds of the game.
So, even if you play your Switch in handheld mode for most of the time that you end up playing the game, the Super Mario Odyssey scaling might make the gaming experience better if you go for the 900p and 60 frames per second by keeping the Switch docked while playing it.
Super Mario Odyssey will be releasing on October 27 of this year exclusively on the Nintendo Switch, so you don’t have much longer to wait before the game comes out.
