League of Legends Client Opening Animation Reverted After Causing Epilepsy Attack

A couple of days back, the opening login animation of the League of Legends client was updated to feature the new Dark Star skins. Unfortunately, the blinking sequence of lights in the background were enough to trigger a mild epilepsy attack.

Posting on Reddit earlier today, a summoner warned that he just suffered from a petit mal seizure after opening the League of Legends client. Riot Games took quick notice of the issue, apologizing to the player and reverting the login animation to the previous Mid-Season Invitational version.

In addition, the Dark Star login animation has been removed from all of the game’s official channels and the developer is also asking community partners to do the same.

“We take this stuff super seriously and we’re grateful to OP for raising visibility on the issue so we could solve it,” noted writer Ryan “Cactopus” Rigney. He also added that the development uses “special software to comb through video content and test for “dangerous seizure-inducing qualities.”

However, as with every program, perfection is never guaranteed. While the developer will make sure that such an episode is never repeated in the future, the community members need to step forward to inform Riot Games if it slips up.

Dark Star Orianna and Dark Star Kha’Zix were announced last month for 1350 RP each. Both of them feature new visual and sound effects, as well as unique recall animations. Dark Star Orianna and Dark Star Kha’Zix are the third and fourth inclusions to the theme, following the release of Dark Star Varus and Dark Star Thresh last year.

League of Legends is also getting a new Dark Star: Singularity game mode. It will take place in a brand new map called “Cosmic Ruins,” which is basically a smaller version of the Summoner’s Rift, and two teams of three players against each other in a round-based mode.
