Rumors have begun to circulate that the Playstation 4 Neo devkit is now becoming available for purchase. The rumor started after word began to circulate that Sony had just sold the first devkit to an inquiring developer. It’s likely these sales will continue as more developers start to ask around.
The Playstation 4 Neo devkit is a must for any studio that would want to develop games for the Neo when it releases, as it allows them to see how games that they develop will run on the console. As the Neo is likely going to be a very popular console, if you want to develop a game you’ll have to own one.
The Playstation 4 Neo, otherwise known as the Playstation 4K, is a more advanced version of the Playstation 4. The console will be able to run games either in their normal resolution or at 4K, which requires more development time. While this means that games in regular resolution are playable, in order to get the full measure of the Neo’s power, games developed for it will also have to have a 4K version alongside the standard version.
Not to mention, the Playstation 4 Neo devkit isn’t cheap. While the Testkit console that’s coming out in October will already cost around 800 dollars, the Devkit is much more expensive, coming in at around 2,000 dollars. The actual console will likely not be much more expensive than the current Playstation 4, meaning likely around 400 dollars.
The Playstation 4 Neo also has some competition in the form of the Xbox One Scorpio, which was revealed at the Microsoft E3 conference and whose claim to fame is its 6 teraflops of processing power, which is even more than what the Playstation 4 Neo has.
We’ll likely be learning more about the Playstation 4 Neo devkit as a whole at the Playstation Meeting, which is slated to take place on September 7, in a few weeks.
