To get a feel of what we can expect from Virtual Reality, the best way to do this is to experience it. This is why for PC owners, it may be worth taking a look at Crytek’s Back to Dinosaur Island which they released today.
Made available today the tech demo is available on Steam and is free. Using the CRYENGINE it was first revealed at the GDC 2015 in San Francisco and was said to be impressive. Now released for everybody to try out, it gives players a hint of the future to come.
Back to Dinosaur Island puts the player in a world where they are a baby dinosaur in a nest surrounded by other eggs yet to hatch. The player can interact with the environment around them, which includes the introduction of an enormous dinosaur who may appear to be slightly scary, but is actually quite friendly.
Crytek’s Director of Production, David Browman had this to say about the demo:
“Back to Dinosaur Island shows how intense, involving and rich virtual reality can be. Players will see a powerful dinosaur breathing inches from their face, getting an unprecedented sense of its immense scale. To watch this scene in 2D is impressive, but when you’re in virtual reality, it becomes more intimate, and more exciting – giving you a feeling of presence and a belief that you’re really right there in a way that no other medium can.”
As you can see from the video above the graphics are very impressive. Back to Dinosaur Island is compatible with Oculus Rift Development Kit 2 models and later.
