Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim has been released on PC and it goes without saying that it’s a console port. All is still not lost, there are few game bugs but it won’t be long before modding community will jump to the rescue of the PC Gamers.

The problem with console ports on PC is, they are poorly optimized for PC and end up with a plethora of bugs and glitches that need special attention of the developer post-release.

We are counting on Bethesda for the special attention to fix all these outstanding issues, meanwhile we have compiled this troubleshooting guide to give you the workarounds that will fix all these crashes, freezes, and performance issues, you may encounter when playing Elder Scrolls V Skyrim.

Even though we only have temporary workarounds for now, we promise you that we will continue to write on PC sides of Skyrim with new modes and tweaks coming shortly after this.

1# How To Take a Screenshot
Press PrintScreen saves a screenshot in the installation directory of Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

2# I Can’t See Any FX Effects In-Game ?
FX Effects in Skyrim like Fire Trail or Cobweb you are supposed to slash through don’t display properly or at times don’t display at all. If you are experiencing this issue, tweak your in-game graphics settings and see if it helps after you have updated your video card drivers. If you still can’t resolve the issue, download FX and Cobweb Fix.

3# and 4# How To Bind Keyboard Keys ? – Can’t Bind Keys
Skyrim doesn’t support keybindings by default, so it’s best to leave it to the modders to fix this.

5# Unable To Start New Game ?
If you have bought the game off Steam, verify the integrity of the files and re-try. Or log-out of the Steam and start Steam and Skyrim executable as administrator.

6# Skyrim – No Sound Fix
If you can’t hear any sound, update your audio drivers and restart your PC. If it doesn’t resolve after that, try running the game in Stereo sound settings. You can set this sound setting in your sound control panel.

If you still can’t resolve it, set the audio quality to 41K – you can do that by going into Playback Devices > Speakers (Or Any Sound Device) > Properties > Advanced and choose Studio Quality 41K 16bit.

7# Can’t Hear NPC Characters Talk ?
Follow the above workarounds but if they don’t fix this issue, try setting the audio to 2.1 or 5.1 in the Windows Audio Settings.

8# Game Freezes In The First Dungeon
If you stand next to the tunnel in the first dungeon, it will freeze the game. It’s a bug in the game so if you want to avoid that freeze, run further away.

9# Skyrim Doesn’t Detect Nvidia Card
Go to Manage 3D Settings in Nvidia Graphics Option and click the drop down box where it says – Preferred Graphics Processor. Select High Performance Nvidia Processor and save the setting.

Skyrim should detect your video card now and if it still doesn’t, – from Global Settings, go to Program Settings tab. Click on the drop down box and find Steam in the list. Click where it says ‘Preferred Graphics Processor’ and choose Nvidia Processor.

10# Skyrim Lags and Stutters in Bright Areas – FPS Fix
Set your shadows to Low and turn your Anti Aliasing Off and your frame rates should improve. Also, update your graphics card drivers and DirectX, they seem to help.

11# NPC Voice Fix
If you experiencing crackling voices of NPC character, which don’t make any sense, it’s a sound issue. You can fix it by setting your sound format to 16 bit, 44100hz.

12# Can’t Continue Past The Character Creation
Make sure you meet the minimum system requirements and have updated graphics card with updated drivers and DirectX installed.

13# Steam – The Game is Currently Unavailable
Usual Steam issue – log out of the Steam and log back-in to resolve it.

14# Crash Immediately After Loading Skyrim
This crash is caused by the sound issue – the same we have talked about above in the article. You can fix it by setting the audio quality to 16 bit, 41K Hz.

15# Crash To Desktop Fix

Go to Start > Control Panel > Sound.
In the Playback tab, right-click on Speakers (or whatever has a green tick next to it), then click Properties.
In the advanced tab on this new window, select 24 bit, 44100Hz (Studio Quality) in the drop down menu.

16# Disable Smooth Mouse Setting – Mouse Acceleration Fix

Go to your Steam Directory > steamapps > common > skyrim > Skyrim.
Create a backup of the SkyrimPrefs.ini file.
Open the file, then scroll down to where it says [Controls] and find bMouseAcceleration=1
Change to bMouseAcceleration=0
Save, exit, and play.

17# How To Disable Vsync

Go to your Steam Directory > steamapps > common > skyrim > Skyrim.
Create a backup of the SkyrimPrefs.ini file
Open the file, then scroll down to where it says [Display]
Add to the bottom of the section iPresentInterval=0
Save, exit, and play.

18# How To Tweak Skyrim FOV

Go to your My Documents > My Games > Skyrim > skyrim.
Create a backup of the skyrim.ini file.
Open the file, then scroll down to where it says [General].
At the bottom of this section, add fdefaultfov=XX (where XX is the FOV value you want to change to).
Save, exit, and play.

19# Failed To Initialize Renderer

20# Skyrim Flickering Textures Nvidia Fix
Most of the gamers with Nvidia graphics card are facing this issue and they can fix it simply by updating the graphics card drivers.

21# Low FPS on Good Rig
If you are experiencing very low frame rates on a high-end PC machine, make sure you haven’t set any option in Nvidia or Catalyst Control Panel to override application, because it will result in low performance. Set all the options to application defaults to resolve this issue.

22# Can’t Get Past The Intro
Fix this issue by following the sound issue fix proposed earlier. These crashes are caused by the sound bugs explained above, which can be fixed easily be tweaking the sound settings.

23# Low FPS – Tweak To Improve FPS
Set shadows to low with everything else maxed and you will see a huge change in frame rates and they will remain stable. Shadows seem to be the biggest culprit for eating the system resources so better set it to low and enjoy other eye candies to max.

24# Skyrim Random Freezes
Again, try the sound fix and you shouldn’t encounter any random freezes in the Skyrim World. If you have any USB plugged-in, un-plug it and try again. It may also fix the issue.

25# Crashing When I Hit Play
Install updated DirectX. Installing DirectX 9 should fix this issue.

26# Skyrim Crashes When Loading New Game

27# Skyrim Crashes at Logo
Try verifying your game cache and uninstall FFDshow if you have it installed in your OS. If it still doesn’t fix, run the game in compatibility with Vista SP2. You can run it in compatibility mode by right clicking the Skyrim executable > Click Compatibility Tab > and choose Vista SP2 from drop down menu and Apply.

28# How To Install Skyrim From Disk

Log in to Steam and click on Library.
Right-click on the game, select Delete local content, and confirm.
Insert the first disc into your computer.
Close Steam (Steam > Exit).
Press Windows Key + R to open Run
In the Run window type: C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe” -install E
Replace E: with the CD/DVD drive you are installing from if is not correct.
Replace C:\Program Files\Steam if your Steam installation is not in the default location.
Press OK. Steam will launch and ask you to sign in if you do not have your password saved. Your installation should continue from the disc.

29# Nothing Happens After Launcher – Game Doesn’t Start
Install DirectX 9 from Microsoft Site.

30# How To Enable Xbox 360 Controller in Skyrim

31# Crash At Launch – Missing X3DAudio1_7.dl
Install DirectX 9 from Microsoft.

32# FPS Fix – Lag Fix
Disable V-sync. Instructions to disable vertical synchronization are above in the article.

33# Low PC Textures
If you find Skyrim PC textures not satisfactory – wait for the modders to do their magic. They have historically made textures better than Bethesda.

34# Skyrim Resolution Fix
You can tweak the following variables to fix any resolution issue you encounter. You just have to edit .ini file in: #:\Users\[User]\Documents\My Games\Skyrim.

iSize W=(desired resolution #)
iSize H=(desired resolution #)

35# TESV.exe Stopped Working
Try the sound fix to resolve this issue.

36# Skyrim Crashes During Load Screen
Run the game in compatibility mode – Vista SP2. Full instructions above.

37# Game Freezes After I Press New Game
Uninstall your Nvidia drivers and Restart. Download and install latest Nvidia Drivers and try again.

38# Skyrim Nvidia Beta Drivers
Download Link.

39# Skyrim Random Freezes
If you are running any antivirus program, it may cause random freezes when you play Skyrim. If it has a game mode, run it in-game mode or you can disable it for the time you play the game.

40# Terrain Textures Tearing – Fix
Update your video card drivers to Skyrim Optimized drivers release. Nvidia beta drivers download link can be found above.

41# Texture / Decal Pop-in Fix
If your game has set invalid LOD bias values resulting in bad textures and decal pop-in. Find the variables below in SkyrimPrefs.ini and set the specified values to fix the issue.

42# Can’t Find Cursor ? Disable Xbox 360 Controller in Game Options
If you can’t see mouse cursor, disable Xbox 360 controller in-game options, and it should pop-up.

How To Make the Key Bindings
Talon Greywolf says. I’m one of those that uses the right side of the Keyboard and not W,S,A,D. and this allows me to make any key emulate another.

It’s quite simple to use.

When you open the program you’ll see 3 tabs. Untitled,GUI,and Variables.

Click the GUI Tab
Click the [Detect output to Emulate]button
Press button you wish to emulate(i.e. Tab to exit menus,R to loot all, etc.)
Click the [Detect input]button
Press button you want it changed to
Click apply

Repeat 2-5 for each key you want to change then Click File>Save as and Enter the Games name(The untitled tab will now say the name you just saved it as.)
When you’re ready to start the game, click run, minimize the window and start your game. Mine looks like this:

Key.Tab = Keyboard.NUMPAD4(Now Instead of hitting tab to exit menus, I hit numpad4)
Key.L = Keyboard.NUMPAD3
Key.R = Mouse.RightButton
Key.D = Keyboard.Right
Key.A = Keyboard.Left (I changed these because you still need a and d for certain things like turning pages, picking locks, etc.)

Short of trying a video card that isn’t of the Radeon family, I really don’t know what to do. I bought Skyrim upon launch only to be greeted with the “black screen” crash. At *RANDOM* points Skyrim will crash to a black screen, where the audio will continue for about 10 seconds, then sound like an audio CD skipping. The only way to get out of it is a hard reboot. I have tried everything I can think of, scoured the internet for fixes, uninstalled/reinstalled the game and drivers. This is NOT an overheating issue, so please don’t go there. I’m posting here in hopes that SOMEONE has figured out a legitimate fix to this problem.

I’m getting the weird, “turn to ashes sparkle” effect stuck on my character. I have been scouring the web for a fix and no body has been able to fix it or even tell me where to start. It is extremely annoying because it looks like sparkles of steam are floating constantly off my character upward… and it just messes with my immersion. ANyone have an idea how to remove this FX effect? I cannot find the name of this effect ANYWHERE

No.21. Tried this and it didn’t work, I’ve also tried most other things written on here as I’ve been trying to fix this for the last 6 hours, please help. I have a GTX 560ti, 4.2 quad core, 8GB. What I really want to know is why it suddenly drops, everything else I’ve read just says to change the settings but if this was the problem then the game shouldn’t of worked in the first place… Drivers are up to date and the PC is only 2 weeks old so its clean.

I dont know if i am on the right blog.

My problems is this, I played the game for almost 2 months without no problems until i updated the game. I also use alot of mods but it never did that kind of problem…

Each time I try to go somewhere with the map (beam) when i appear in a location, i have a horde of monsters appearing also at my location (up to 30 different monsters). Is this part of the update? I reinstalled and deleted the script files after unnistaling but with no succes. what should i do?

(the last update i did was the recend one)

This might be texture. But when I look at anything like fire or use the fus to dah (not sure about any other shouts) the screen starts flashing yellow and the fire has this odd texture arising around it. Anybody else have this? Anybody know how to fix this?

  I have the same problem and I got the problem after I fiddled with the SkyrimPrefs.ini in my Documents. You may want to check that they are what they should be. Specifically the lighting and shadow aspects.

When i equip a weapon/spell in my right hand and try to use it, my character randomly moves SUPER far away from where i origannaly was aiming. Like if i tried to use Flames in my right hand and Sparks in my left and i right click to use my Flames on say, an imperial gaurd. My character moves away from the Imperial Gaurd and goes to either a random wall, the ceiling, or the floor. Any suggestions?????

I have a windows xp computer and I dont have the option to change the audio settings to Studio Quality. My audio hardware is from IDT, and the IDT control panel doesnt have studio quality either. Please help! I really want to play skyrim but i cant without audio..

Hey guys, could you help me solve my problem? Skyrim works great to me I have a new computer from last summer (MS windows 7 ultimate 64 bit SP 1 AMD phenom II X4 955 8GB RAM NVIDIA Geforce GTX 560) But at start I can’t look around with mouse… However, when I’ve waited and it went to character creation by itself, I’ve created my character without any problems. But when I want to complete it with clicking on R as it writes nothing happens, I’ve tried all the keys and only thing happens when i press ; it shows the console. I’ve trought to reinstall, lower details, run it in Vista SP2 but it didn’t help I don’t know what else should I do please help.

I’ve been waiting on Bethsoft support to work on my issue for almost 6 weeks now, and the only reply I get is \Your issue has been ecalated\ sigh…. Anyways. My issue is that the Resolution Resets before the game even starts. It reverts back to the factory preset after I hit okay every time. I have a nVida GTX 570 updated divers to version 2.9053. Tried everything I can think of and everything Bethsoft has told me so far. If anyone has suggestions please help me out. 6 weeks of no Skyrim on my gaming PC hurts…. Thanks Zawad Iftikhar.

my character is stuck moving backwards. I have tried loading a previously saved game, but it didn’t help. Does anyone have an idea how to fix this?

The absolute solution to the random but certain graphics card kernel mode crash (I had it on my NVIDIA GTX 460) is to download MSI Afterburner and set your GPU fan speed to around %60 so when it’s on load, it doesn’t crash anymore.

Hey guys, first let me say that i played Skyrim using a \borrowed virtual copy\ and enjoyed it so much i decided to splurge on the real thing on Steam along with the high texture pack.

The problem now though is that the damned buttons on my XB360 controller are not working in the menus! I can fight and move and use stuff well enough, but as soon as i get past the 4-point menu system, the A button suddenly stops responding and i can’t even exit the game because of it. Any ideas on what might be causing this unresponsiveness in the menus? Back into combat is fine, and all controls work perfectly.

Hope you can help , otherwise i just wasted my money on this

First of all I’m French so please forgive my poor English :s

I have some sounds problem with Skyrim. I do not have any kind of problem while playing, no graphic problems I mean, but i’m pretty sure i do not have every sounds. For example when fighting a dragon i can hear it when it launches it’s firebreath or when it bites me, but I can’t hear it’s wings \flapping\ in the air, can’t hear it walks, if it falls to the ground it makes it so silently that it obviously can’t be working good.

I made some tests with your \no sound\ solution but it remains the same. After a few researches on forums I really don’t know what could possibly cause this and when i listen to the different sounds I can’t hear in my Skyrim’s folder… Dude i’ll stay my entire day throwing fireballs in the air if I can fix it !

Hope you understood me and have an idea to satisfy my ears !

  Save File Corrupted. I hope it isn’t the case or you will be disappointed ^__^ Try to replace your exe file with any friend who has working game.
  
  Or try to reload a save that is few quests earlier. If that doesn’t cut it, game might be corrupted. Back-up saves; re-install. Try.. It’s a hit and trial, sadly.

Hello guys, I begin the game demo plays I choose my character everything goes perfect but then after the first character was executed and his head cut there is no blood but a red colour showed in the screen like error. Then everything goes normal but nobody speaks and game doesnt go on. but the screen is not locked on. I can look around or rain falls down but game doesnt go on anybody speaks.

i’m having the same problem, my skyrim works fine and looks lovely, but i’ve just started being unable to exit menus or crafting menus with the tab button and it’s becoming very frustrating. if anyone has any advice on this i would welcome it greatly. cheers in advance

  Patch the game first. Update your graphics card drivers and DirectX. Nvidia/ATI release Skyrim optimized drivers, use them. It’s a graphics issue. To be on the safe side, first check your graphics card is supported by the game. Minimum System Requirements CHECK!

        Did you buy the game off Steam ? or bought a disc. Re-install if you bought a disc. Verify the integrity of the game cache – if you bought it off Steam.
        
        How To Verify the integrity of the game cache:
        1. Open Steam.
        2. Click on your Games library.
        3. Now right-click on the game name e.g. Call of Duty Black Ops and click on Properties. Keep in mind this will only work for Steam games, not for shortcuts to games.
        4. Next, go to the tab Local files.
        5. Below click on Verify integrity of game cache.
        6. Wait until Steam validated the game cache integrity.
        
        If this doesn’t solve your issue – Contact Support!

        Disable any antivirus or firewall you have….. if that doesn’t work – re-install and first update the game through Steam ^__^ it should install all the patches before its playable. Once done, try again ^

        Must be an issue with your game saves… they have been corrupted – If you have just started the game, better start fresh, with a new save.

        It won’t hurt to try different workarounds before you start fresh…. I mean if you can snipe the issue. Look up all the freezing related issues and try the workarounds mentioned. You may get lucky!

Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

when i launch the game it loads to the menu ok, but when i go to start my new game it sometimes stays on the loading screen and i can hear the sound of the house and cart but the screen stays on the loading screen so i have to force quit the game with task meager or, it will go to a black screen as the sound of the hours and cart starts and once again I have to force quit the game with task manager.

It’s the pc version of the game for steam in the UK. I have 4GB DDR2 Ram, 1.5TB Hard Drive, Intel Quad Core CPU 2.5GHz, Nvidia GeForce GTX 560 Ti, Creative SB X-FI

I have deleted the games local content and re-installed from a steam download 3 times, i have tried different graphic settings and still the same problem, i have also checked the integrity of the game cache. I have also tried to reinstall using the disc for the game but as soon as it’s done steam then updates the game. I have tried running the game in compatibility with vista sp2 with admin privileges. But with vista sp2 the game stays at a black screen until I open task manager then it flash the screen and the game shows but like only it’s all broken only moves once in a while and there is no texture looks all blocky and strange shapes and lines all over.

my game runs terrific but i cannot see any fx! why cant i see any fx this just pisses me off. I updated my drivers, can play oblivion and any other game and see fx, play skyrim and i cannot see any fx. i downloaded the enb patch but it makes my game run so horrible that i dont even want to play anymore. all a dragon can do is breath on me, no fire. spells look like i have gas coming from my hands and smoke is completely invisible.

I have got a rather annoying problem. I can not visualize any NPC except when its close to me.I can see their arrows or spells coming from far away though.

I’m havin a very strange problem… whenever i try to equip a dragonscale armor the game crashes and freezes and ctrl-alt-del doesn’t work so i have to turn it off manually… i really apreciate the help thank you

I can hear voices and music but I cannot hear effect or footsteps. Makes the game boring to play. Any ideas?

When you refer to the ‘Can’t get past the intro’ bug, does this mean the glitch where the cart driver doesn’t get off, but stays on the cart and the wheels keep turning, so you are essentially stuck against a wall with no apparent way to go further? If so, I have that bug, and I have no idea what to do

ok nvm that comment i figured out the solution quit the game and when u open it set the graphic to low and u will be able to play throw it , enjoy ^_^ !!

hey all!!i have a problem with a bug.When i turn in fps mode my weapon and shield doesn’t appear.This bug also appeared when i have turned in fps camera and i have spells in my hand.The hands don’t appeared in these two cases.HELPPPPPPPPPPP PLZZZZZZ….

The game runned all fine until today, I started it and all the dialogues just pass away fast (not able to read 2 words in a sentence, and its gone) and i cant hear a word the NPC is saying.

Can someone Help me with Spell sound problem??? All my spell have no sound… no spell sound only others have sound.. just spell sound problem. can help to fix this?

oh I managed to fix it now, what you have to do is right-click on the game in your steam library, click Properties. In this window open the tab Local Files and click Verify Integrity of Game Cache.
Do all this with your firewall turned off (not sure if this is necessary but do it anyway

hey i am having the same problem as many others i know of…
i open skyrim, go to options turn all graphics right down (i have slow computer) put into windowed mode and click play…
bethesda game studios then the logo comes up …. 2mins l8r
oh its loaded now heres the problem i hit continue or load it goes onto the loading screen… 2hours later
still on loading screen text is changing picture zooming in & out smoke still moveing..
but me not playing!!!D=
this happened when i turned the computer on 2 days ago
i didnt do anything different didnt change anything and idk whats happened. tried re installing, verifying, deleting saves and starting again but IT WILL NOT LOAD MY GAME!!!
it would be much apreciated if you could help me

Constant howling wind bug.

Somehow, don’t know when, probably after leaving a windy cave, or a mountain region, the howling wind persists and keep sounding wherever I am, fast travelling or entering a house etc. etc. does not help. Loading a very old save (like 16 hours back) help, as I did not realise this was a bug at first. Please, if there is any way to rid myself of this sound tell me! I’m going completely bonkers soon, it totaly ruins the game experience… And having to replay from that old save is a daunting prospect to say the least…

Here’s what I did to resolve the issue if huge colored textures stretch across the screen making it impossible to see anything :

I Diagnosed that I had a custom, or ‘weird’ driver at intel.com. I proceeded to uninstall the driver using Device Manager in Control Panel. After uninstalling the driver my computer blue-screened so I started it in Safe Mode. Then I installed the up to date driver for my graphics card on the intel website. Restarted and the game worked.

I just found out the game works fine on my other laptop. However, this laptop is by far better than the other. I’m guessing there’s a program i’m missing or something…

p.s. how do I verify the game files?

In my case, everything loads fine. The problem is there is no sound at all. When I reach the part where we are suppose to get down from the carriage (the introduction of the game, before character creation), nothing happens. no one moves but I can still look around.

In my case, I came into a very strange problem: I can run the game smoothly for some while, but mostly when in game the character changes scenes(e.g., get in/ get out of a house) the frame rate would suddenly drop to 4-5. A temporary solution to this problem is when the game suddenly lags, alt-tab to desktop, then back to the game, and the frame rate will recover. However, it is very annoying.

I have tried a lot of methods, but the problem lingers. Does anyone have the same problem?
