This will be a shocker for all eSports fans. Despite the fears that World Cyber Games (WCG) is edging towards its downfall, none of us wanted to see it close down its tournaments. Yet, the organization has sent an unfortunate email announcing that they will cease operating tournaments in 2014.
According to OnGamers, the chief executive of World Cyber Games Brad Lee has sent out an email to all the partners announcing the sad news.
Apart from announcing that 2014 will not see any international level tournaments, including the historic grand finales, it seems like the future of the events is in trouble too.
The email reads:
This year, World Cyber Games Inc. will not organize tournaments and events, including the World Cyber Games finals world.
Although the email said that the committee had decided to allow all the partners to use the WCG brand in their respective countries, it will still not be the same when no worldwide event will be held by them.
“There are many great moments based on your dedication. Although the brand has disappeared but WCG spirit will remain forever in the hearts of each player and fans. This moment is very difficult and painful for me. However, I must say goodbye to the WCG,” says Brad Lee.
We have seen in the recent days that the trends were shifting away from the event. Certain popular games were dropped recently while major advertisement contracts were also lost. It could be that the profitability of the event became a hurdle that they could not overcome.
