There might be more trouble looming over the DC Extended Universe (DCEU) because Warner Bros. has apparently decided to take a very relaxed position when it comes to spinoff adaptations such as Batgirl and Nightwing.
According to a new report from The Wrap earlier today, the studio is more focused on the main members of the Justice League. This includes Batman, Superman, Aquaman, Flash, Wonder Woman, and “possibly” Green Lantern. The prospect of Cyborg is also up in the air, despite being one of the core and original members.
When it comes to Nightwing, director Chris McKay has already affirmed that the studio will be taking its sweet time before production is finally given the green light. Warner Bros. is also not in any hurry to find a replacement for Batgirl after director Joss Whedon decided to make an exit last week. In addition, other similar spinoff adaptations such as Lobo and Deathstroke remain in stasis as well.
The DCEU has failed to match the success that the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has managed to enjoy in the past decade. Hence, it makes sense for the upper echelons to be walking more cautiously with upcoming projects, especially after the half-baked release of Justice League last year. However, this care for preparation appears to be further pushing the release dates back. While fans will always vote for waiting it out (if needed) for a good experience, the wait should not be that long.
The DCEU is currently looking at Aquaman releasing in theaters on December 21, 2018. The MCU, however, has already opened the year with Black Panther and rampaging ahead for Avengers: Infinity War on April 25, 2018.
