Bringing “a dark side” to the series, Total War: Attila is now available on Microsoft Windows. Featuring enhanced UI and top-notch visual fidelity, the game manages to provide an experience the Rome II failed to deliver.
Despite all its betterments and changes, there are a fistful of launch issues, as reported by a number of players. This guide aims at providing a quick overview of frequent errors, freezes, crashes, and their possible workarounds.
In case you come across an issue not listed here, do make sure to let us know in the discussion box below and we’ll try and sort it out:
#1 Total War Attila VRAM/Video Memory Fix
Some users have reported that they are being shown lesser VRAM value than their actual. The issue can be fixed by following steps:
- First, you need to go C/Users/your user name/AppData/Roaming/The Creative Assembly/Attila/scripts/preferences.script file. Open it using notepad.
- Now you should find the code that says:
gfx_video_memory 0;
You need to change the value 0 to -2000 and save the changes. Game should now show the normal value. Noted that this is for the cards with 4GB VRAM. If your VRAM is different, do share with us your results.
#2 Total War Attila – Performance/Freezing Issue on Laptops
If you aren’t getting optimum experience and your laptop is good enough to handle the game, you need to make sure that the game is being run by using your dedicated video memory.
You can change the settings using your respective control panels for Nvidia and AMD. You should also make sure that your laptop is plugged in while you play the game.
#3 Total War Attila – Screen Tearing Fix
Using the Video memory fix (see #1) should resolve the issue. It goes without saying that you need to make sure that you are using the latest version of GPU drivers.
#4 Total War Attila – End of Turn Crash/Bug
There have been some reports that after some turns, the game will crash on random. Although there is no proper fix, it’s recommended that when the screen freezes, don’t force exit the application rather wait for 60 seconds or so as it can get back to the functioning state.
If that doesn’t work, try disabling your antivirus/firewall and see if it works. If nothing works, and you are re-downloading/re-installing, disable your antivirus during the that time too as it might corrupt some files.
Keep in mind that while your protection is disabled, you are prone to viruses on the internet while browsing so try avoiding that.
#5 Total War Attila – The Game has Stopped Working
First, you need to make sure that you are using the latest version of GPU drivers. If that that is not the issue, try verifying your game files to fix the issue. Don’t forget to restart after you have verified the files.
#6 Total War Attila – The Game Crashes on the Menu Screen
There are a few things you can try to get rid of crashes during loading or menu screen. First, try a PC restart after verifying game files.
If that doesn’t work, make sure that your Steam installation is in the same drive/partition as your save game folder. This seems to have solve the issue for some.
#7 Total War Attila – How to Change Language
If you are looking to change language, this short tutorial will help you do that.
#8 Total War Attila – Graphics Settings Fix
If you aren’t able to change the graphics from settings menu, you can do so manually. Go to C/Users/your user name/AppData/Roaming/The Creative Assembly/Attila/scripts/preferences.script file. Open it using a notepad and after you make the desired changes, close the file and save the changed settings.
#9 Total War Attila – 12 Files Missing Error
Some users have reported that after verifying game files, they get the message that 12 files failed to download/update. In that case, you can try out a couple of things:
- Try restarting your PC and running the game again.
- Disable your antivirus/firewall while the game is being updated/downloaded.
#10 Total War Attila – Blue Scree of Death (BSOD Fix)
If you are getting BSOD while playing Total War Attila, you should try out the fix mentioned here. Since it involves some technical knowledge, users not comfortable with the procedure should abstain. For general troubleshooting, make sure that your hardware temperature is optimum and you have latest drivers installed for it.
