When Tekken 7 Fated Retribution was revealed one of the biggest revelations was the inclusion of Akuma. It appears that this cross-over event was planned about four years ago and has finally come to fruition.
In a new interview with in Famitsu translated by Source Gaming Capcom’s Yoshinori Ono and Bandai Namco Entertainment’s Katsuhiro Harada discussed how the relationship between Street Fighter and Tekken came about. They also discussed what it took to get Akuma into the latest Tekken game.
Harada revealed the origins of the plan to get Akuma into the Tekken games:
“That was a reveal we’d been cooking up for some time. I’d conveyed the idea to Mr. Ono around four years ago, and we’d been working on it slowly. We actually had Akuma’s silhouette appear in the opening movie of Tekken 7. But, it was hard to make sure his identity wasn’t leaked.”
On who Harada wants Akuma to take on in the game, he revealed:
“if I were to have Akuma in a serious fight, a battle that Tekken and Street Fighter fans want to see, then I thought “I can’t have it happen in a spinoff.” For Street Fighter and Tekken to truly face off, I needed the appropriate structure, and because there’s a lot of focus and attention paid to Tekken’s story, I wanted to incorporate it there”
This shows the importance that Akuma has in Tekken 7 Fated Retribution, with his appearance not just being a gimmick to catch the attention of fighting game fans. It looks like his appearance in the game will have big implications.
