The galaxy is not the place to explore things alone. You are going to need good companions if you are to survive your adventure.
Soloing won’t get you anywhere since higher level quests demand a companion or a group, at least you can do is choose a good companion.
You will have your first companion when you are at level 6 or 8 and when you get a ship, it automatically comes with a droid companion.
Although companions are class specific but when you reach level 50, your companion will be able to fit in almost every role.
You can do different things with your companions. They can do the trade for you and turn the goods in your bags into revenue and do the crafting for you and turn your resources into valuable items.

They can also give you additional quests if you are affectionate enough. Most of your actions and dialogues will affect them in one way or another.
If you get sufficient affection through your actions in their favor, you will open up more content but if you are not into romance or extra quests, you can forget about the affection.
They can also help you in your quests. You can use them as tanks to divert enemy fire or you can give them role of a healer to absorb more damage without dying etc.
