According to Yoshinori Ono, producer of the Street Fighter series of fighting games, we won’t be getting a Street Fighter 6 announcement during EVO this year. While there have been rumors about the announcement coming across the internet, Ono took to Twitter to put those rumors to rest for the time being.
According to his Twitter post, Ono and his team are still hard at work developing the Street Fighter 5 Arcade Edition, and who knows when they’ll finish that and be able to move on to developing Street Fighter 6?
Street Fighter 5 came out back in 2016, and despite the hype surrounding its release the game got a good bit of criticism due to the absence of many characters and various technical difficulties, which Street Fighter 5 Arcade Edition will hopefully fix when it’s released.
The gap between Street Fighter 4 and Street Fighter 5 was eight years long, since that game came out in 2008. So, since it’s only been three years since Street Fighter 5 came out, it might be a petty good while longer before we get any hint of Street Fighter 6.
While there won’t be a Street Fighter 6 announcement at EVO, there’s no reason that there shouldn’t be numerous other announcements for other fighting games at the same time. EVO is one of the biggest fighting game events in the world, so it’s the perfect place to announce other fighting games.
Of course, at the moment, we have no idea of what those games, if they’re even announced, will be. It could be new indie ones, or a spinoff or new entry in some classic franchise, or even announcements of new Street Fighter 5 characters but we likely won’t know until EVO actually comes around.
So, while we won’t be getting a Street Fighter 6 announcement for what might be a long time to come, we can at least look forward to Street Fighter 5 Arcade Edition and whatever Ono’s team comes up with for that.
