While still in active development, know that the post-apocalyptic Colorado of Wasteland 3 will have more stories to tell outside of the main campaign.

Speaking with SegmentNext in a recent interview, game director Tim Campbell confirmed that Wasteland 3 will indeed have post-release content support. The developer has already cooked up some ideas to either further the storyline or add new content through expansion packs.

However, inXile Entertainment will only start working on the DLC once Wasteland 3 has officially released and is stable. Campbell noted that their efforts are not only to release the game but to also make sure that the experience is great.

The team definitely has some ideas for stories and content that we’d like to work on as DLC after the game launches, but nobody is actually working on it yet. Wasteland 3 is such a sprawling and reactive game that we’re spending 100% our time and effort on making the game experience as great as possible.

When asked if there were plans to add microtransactions, Campbell assured that there were none. In an age where in-game purchases are considered a norm, it’s highly refreshing to see a developer focusing on pure, unadulterated storytelling.

Elsewhere in the interview, Campbell also discussed how Wasteland 3 will have multiple viable builds. The progression system has been completely overhauled to add a newfound freedom that will help players tailor their rangers. Every set of attributes, skills, perks, and quirks can be customized for squad compositions. In addition, the Kodiak — player vehicle — will be open to new upgrades as well, including improved chassess and turrets, special weapons, heavier armor, “as well as some surprises” that players will have to find for themselves.

The upcoming sequel will feature an optional story-driven co-op mode, the first in the franchise. Players can choose to team up to work together through major storyline junctions or split to pursue their own goals outside of the missions. It’s one of the many new improvements that Wasteland 3 offers.

Wasteland 3 is scheduled to release for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC on May 19, 2020. For now, there are no plans to port the sequel over to the Nintendo Switch. Backers have been waiting since 2016 for the game to finish. Suffice to say, based on all footage and details available, the wait was worth it.
