When it comes to Star Wars, keeping to the Canon is important. This is why EA say they won’t be bringing The Force Awakens characters into Star Wars Battlefront.
According to comments made to the Wall Street Journal by EA finance chief Blake Jorgensen they can’t just take characters from the future and plant them into the past timeline:
“You can’t make a game in ’Star Wars’ that violates the canon of ‘Star Wars,’ ” EA finance chief Blake Jorgensen said. “Meaning, you can’t take something from the future and bring it back into the past unless it’s a reference.”
This thankfully also means that some characters will likely not be making an appearance too. For example, the unpopular Jar Jar Binks may stay in the past. That is of course unless there is a DLC release that is based in the past, and without the popular characters from the original trilogy films.
The concept of Star Wars Canon, or the rules that have been set by the original trilogy, and prequel movies and “accepted” literature may complicate things, but it is important to the Star Wars Universe. This is important enough for Disney to have to actually restrict it upon obtaining the movie rights. In some respect this may have been an unpopular move as it removed a lot of the “extended universe” but created more control.
Jorgensen didn’t rule out Battlefront 2 having The Force Awakes content though, but little detail was revealed on that:
“We’re trying to stay tightly connected to the ‘Star Wars’ beat for future movies, and we will obviously in future Star Wars games be able to tap the new characters and vehicles and so forth,”
What would you like to see in Battlefront 2? Should it feature the new movies, or stick to the past? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below.
