Nixxes Software has done an excellent job with the PC port of Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Despite that, the PC version of the game has been experiencing issues like black screen, crash of startup and more.

Shadow of the Tomb Raider Balck Screen, Low FPS and Fixes
The PC version of the Shadow of the Tomb Raider is an excellent one with an incredible implementation of DirectX 12 that allows for relatively higher frame rates compared to DirectX 11.
Not only that, the PC version is also well optimized. However, with so many PC configurations out there, there are bound to be issues with the game.
The following are the Shadow of the Tomb Raider errors and issues that players have bee experiencing along with their possible fixes and workarounds.
Out Of Memory Error Fix
PLayers have reported that game crashes on startup with the error “Out Of Memory”. While the developers are working to fix this issues you will have to do with the workaround for now.
Open Steam and right-click on the game and select properties. From there go the Beta tab and from the drop-down list select the second option and the game will download a patch. This will resolve your “Out Of Memory” error.
DXGI_ERROR_DEVICE_HUNG Fix
This is another one of the errors that Nvidia GPU users have been experiencing with the game. However, the solution is very simple.
The issue is the latest Nvidia Driver and all you need to do is install the driver version 399.07 and make sure to do a clean installation. This should resolve the issue.
If you are getting audio issues after installing the version 399.07 driver, then all you have to do is verify integrity of game files.
Crash On Startup, Game Not Starting
This is another one of the issues that players have been experiencing. Here are a couple of solutions that might fix this issue.
Make sure you are using updated GPU drivers as the old ones can cause the game to crash as they don’t have the setting necessary to run the game.
Another reason for the crash might be the anti-virus or the Windows Defender as they might be detecting the game’s exe file as a trojan virus. Either disable the anti-virus or make an exception for the game’s exe file in the anti-virus and the issue should resolve.
Another reason for the game not starting could be that the game is not recognizing your external GPU and instead is using the integrated GPU for your Laptop or Desktop PC.
Make sure your game uses the dedicated Nvidia/AMD GPU instead of the Integrated GPU. To do that some laptops have the option to launch the game on the dedicated GPU by right-clicking them.
If you are not getting the option then you will have to do it through BIOS by changing the settings to always use the dedicated GPU instead of the integrated one.
Black Textures Fix
Some players are experiencing blacked out Textures while playing the game. While the devs will be fixing it with a future patch but there is a simple workaround.
Just disable the tesselation from the options and the textures will go back to being normal.
Game Freezing
Players have reported that the game freezes randomly while playing. However, the solution to this problem is very simple.
Start the game and open Task Manager and click on “More Details” at the bottom. Now select the “Details” tab and look for the game’s exe in the list. Right-click on it and set the priority to “High”. This should resolve the freezing issue for the game.
Black Screen On Startup Fix
Black Screen is quite a common issue in PC version of games, however, it isn’t a critical one. Players have reported that when they start Shadow of the Tomb Raider they only see a black screen while they can hear the sound.
The solution is simple, just start the game and when the black screen appears, press “ALT + Enter” and the game will go into Windowed Mode. Now go to the video settings and set the resolution to your monitor’s native resolution and you will be able to play the game in Fullscreen mode without any black screen.
Controller Not Working
Players have reported that their controller isn’t working with the game whether its Xbox or Dualshock. Here is a solution that should resolve the issue for you.
All you have to do is click Steam > Settings > Controller > General Controller Settings > Checkmark Xbox or PS4 Configuration Support whichever controller you are using. This should make the controller work with Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
Steam Controller Not Working Properly
Players have reported that the Steam controller for some reason doesn’t work properly with Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
The solution to this problem is quite easy. Open Steam Controller config and select the config template “Gamepad with high sensitivity/precision camera”.
Now you need to change the “right TP” to selecting “Analog-stick Mouse” and then change the click properties for “right TP” by selecting “RS Stick”.
Now start the game and deactivate the Steam controller in options. This will make the Steam Controller work properly.

Make sure you are using the latest GPU drivers and I would recommend the Game-Ready Drivers for Shadow of the Tomb Raider, period, as those drivers are specifically optimized for Shadow of the Tomb Raider.
Next up is making sure that there is no background process running that is using your CPU, HDD or RAM as it will impact the game’s performance. Open “Task Manager” and if you find any program using too much of your CPU and HDD then terminate that program.
If you have a GPU that supports DirectX 12 then I would suggest you play the game with DirectX 12 enabled as it will allow for higher FPS relative to DirectX 11.
Another thing you can try is for those who own at least Nvidia GTX 10 series or high-end GTX 900 series GPU. Open Nvidia Control Panel and select “Manage 3D settings” and then select “Program Settings”.
Here will be a list of games from which you need to select the Shadow of the Tomb Raider and if it isn’t there and add the game’s exe file to the list.
Now go through the options and look for V-sync and set it to “Fast”. This has the potential to give you a significant FPS boost or possibly a steady 60 FPS experience only if you have the CPU and GPU that can provide it.
