32-Core Ryzen Threadripper 2990X was announced at Computex 2018, however, AMD is yet to reveal the enthusiast-level CPU and reveal its specs. While there is still time before that happens but Der8auer got an idea and simulated 32-Core Ryzen Threadripper 2990X using overclocked AMD EPYC 7601.
Der8auer overclocked the AMD EPYC 7601 to 3.4 GHz, which is expected to be the base clock for 32-Core Ryzen Threadripper 2990X based on leaks and rumors.
While Der8auer used AMD EPYC server setup but he did add some modifications of his own to the setup.
However, he did face some challenges while overclocking the AMD EPYC 7601 as server motherboards aren’t designed for overclocking.
He started the benchmarks with just 4 DIMMs. As you can see the benchmarks in the video below, the server-grade ram being a bottleneck is quite apparent which doesn’t represent the Ryzen Threadripper 2990X performance since it will be optimized and gaming RAM will yield better results than server-grade RAM.
However, using 8 DIMMs yields some impressive results in the benchmarks but, don’t expect it to be the exact representation of the performance of real Threasdripper 2990X. The overclocker also ran some benchmarks by overclocking the AMD EPYC 7601 at 3.8 GHz.
As we mentioned earlier, the release date for 2nd-gen Ryzen Threadripper is yet to be announced but, reportedly the Threadripper 2990X will launch in August. The report suggests that Threadripper 2950X will also launch the same day.
This falls in line with the previous report that AMD will reveal the 2nd-gen Threadripper in partnership with Ferrari.
Reportedly, the company has partnered up with Ferrari for the reveal event of 2nd-gen Ryzen Threadripper 2990X and will be hosting the event at Maranello in Northern Italy.
As for the specs, rumors and leaks have suggested that Threadripper 2990X will feature 3 GHz base clock and a boost clock of 4 GHz along with 3MB L1 Cache, 16MB L2 Cache, 64MB L3 Cache and XFR support which will give up to 200MHz of boost to the CPU’s clock speed.
Threadripper 2990X is not the only AMD CPU whose specs have leaked along with benchmarks as Ryzen 3 2300X And Ryzen 5 2500X have popped up online along with their specs and benchmarks.
What do you think of simulated Ryzen Threadripper 2990X performance using the overclocked AMD EPYC 7601? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below.
