Xbox One-PS4 Rocket League Cross Platform Play Now Ready, Sony’s Approval Needed

Rocket League cross platform play between Xbox One and Playstation 4 is now ready, and only needs Sony's permission to get put into the game.

If you have friends that are either on Xbox One or the Playstation 4, but you both like Rocket League, don’t worry. Psyonix has said that Xbox One-PS4 Rocket League cross platform play is now finally ready, and they only need Sony’s approval to release it to the public (that’s a big hurdle, right? No?).

Rocket League is one of the more popular arcade titles for Xbox Live, PC, and Playstation 4, but up until now and a few months ago cross-platform play between the three was a slow process. While Psyonix had been able to create Xbox One-PC cross platform play (easily since Microsoft owns both Windows and Xbox), Rocket League cross platform play for Xbox One and Playstation 4 had been a whole other can of worms.

Psyonix has, as a whole, been very open to any sort of challenge that might come their way. Whether it’s making a port of the game over to the upcoming Nintendo NX (one of the many ports that they’ve got of their game) to making it able to run on the Playstation 4 Neo.

Back in March, the studio’s vice president Jeremy Dunham had said that Rocket League cross platform play had been figured out, and Microsoft had given their approval. Only a few weeks ago, Dunham had said such a thing would be easy to implement.

Now, all Psyonix needs is to get Sony’s own approval, and according to Dunham the cross platform system can be up and running in a few hours. Considering that Rocket League has over fifteen million players across all of its platforms, it might generate even more sales for them, especially now that the game is getting a retail version.

If Psyonix really wanted to get crazy they could implement Rocket League cross platform play on Playstation 4, Xbox One, and PC all at once, but that depends on how plausible they think it is. For now, we’ll just have to wait and see if Sony gives Psyonix the approval to put cross-platform play in.
