Traditionally, Intel has always dominated the CPU market, however, all of that changed last year with the launch of AMD Ryzen but, according to Mindfactory, Intel has taken the lead back from AMD in January 2018 with the help of Intel Coffee Lake.
Mindfactory is Germany’s largest online retailer, who revealed that Intel has skipped ahead of AMD in CPU market share with the help of its Coffee Lake series of the processors as their availability is better compared to their initial launch.
According to numbers crunched by Mindfactory, Core i7-8700K was the most selling CPU for the retailer and has contributed in Intel taking the lead back in the market share which rose to 58 percent and AMD’s share dropped to 42%.
Not only Intel took the market lead back but, the report suggests that Intel’s monthly revenue also increased with Core i7-8700K leading the way. Intel took the 64% of the overall CPU market revenue and 36 percent of the market revenue belonged to AMD.
Moving ahead, Intel Coffee Lake CPUs were leading the sales with around three-fourths of Intel’s sold processors were Coffee Lake. Skylake-X also showcased signs of life but not much.
As for AMD, 91 percent of its processor sold were Ryzen and only 9 percent processor sold were Threadripper. Back in November, this number was 93.7 percent and 6.3 percent respectively.
However, this victory for Intel might be short-lived as Ryzen 2 processors from AMD are set to launch in March with Zen 2 following next year. Also, it will be interesting to see how Intel’s Cannon-Lake handles itself when it launches.
Speaking of the processors, currently, Intel’s and AMD’s processors are at risk due to Spectre and Meltdown security flaws. However, AMD has assured that Zen 2 will be immune to these flaws. Furthermore, the company has noted that Zen 2 will be secured from future security threats.
Also, Intel has promised hardware fix for Spectre and Meltdown for its upcoming line of processors. According to Intel CEO Brian Krzanich, the company is working on a hardware fix for its next line of processors that will be available in 2019.
