Crossplay has been a topic of discussion for quite a while as Microsoft and Nintendo has embraced it while Sony Interactive Entertainment is hesitant implementing crossplay for PlayStation 4. However, not everyone shares Sony’s point of view as Nintendo has stated that it helps publishers to feature crossplay.
This is according to Nintendo CEO Tatsumi Kimishima and senior executive officer Susumu Tanaka. During Nintendo’s 78th Annual General Meeting of Shareholders, the company noted the importance of crossplay in video games.
While Kimishima refrained himself from commenting on the crossplay in Fortnite and Minecraft since these are not Nintendo titles but added that the company’s mindset is not changed about offering its titles on other platforms which indicates that Nintendo is on board to support cross-play is all of the titles released for Switch.
I will have to refrain from commenting directly about (crossplay in) Fortnite and Minecraft because those are not Nintendo titles. But I will say that our fundamental way of thinking about offering Nintendo titles on other platforms remains unchanged.
Susumu Tanaka added that Nintendo will do whatever they can to support crossplay for titles released for Nintendo Switch and noted that the company is “inclined” to help publishers to support this feature.
Crossplay basically comes about from conversations between publishers and platform holders. We are inclined to do what we can to help publishers incorporate crossplay when that is what they want.
However, he added that the company won’t force any other company to allow crossplay as “other parties involved also have a say in whether we are able to reach this outcome or not” and will “continue to discuss it with them.”
However, Nintendo is not the only one who has embraced cross-play as Microsoft recently introduced this feature in Minecraft for Nintendo Switch. Both companies announced it with a trailer which sort of took a jab at Sony for not allowing cross-play.
Sony on the other hand, hasn’t been very forthcoming when it comes to explaining why it doesn’t allow cross-play for PlayStation 4. Many developers have tried to feature cross-play between Xbox One and PlayStation 4 and many of them have blamed Sony for not being able to feature Cross-play.
The most recent example of which is Fallout 76 as Bethesda noted that Sony is the reason for no cross-play in Fallout 76.
