We’ll Be Seeing Nazgul In Middle-earth: Shadow Of War, Along With Backstories

We’ll be seeing the Nazgul in Middle-earth: Shadow of War, and we’ll apparently get some information about them.

The statement from Monolith’s director of creative Michael De Plater has said that you’ll be facing the Nazgul as bosses in the game, and we’ll also be getting backstories for all of them.

The Nazgul in The Lord of the Rings are a group of nine hooded, black-cloaked figures that endlessly hunt the One Ring. They were originally nine different Kings of Men, but the rings of power that Sauron gave them corrupted them into his willing servants.

Only two of them have canon names: the Witch-King of Angmar, and Khamul the Easterling. Others have previously been named in other forms of media, but none of those are truly canon to the series. We’ll be learning more about the other seven when the game releases.

The Nazgul made an appearance in the debut trailer for the game, leading an attack on the Gondorian city of Minas Ithil (with the Witch-king riding a Fell Beast and one of the Nazgul having a kickass iron face mask). However, they’ll be a big presence in the story.

Players will be fighting the Nazgul in Middle-earth: Shadow of War as bosses, each with their own sort of gameplay style and unique details. We’ll be learning about their backstories, in the same way we learned about how Sauron was able to forge the One Ring in Shadow of Mordor.

Of course, with all of the events happening in the Shadow of Mordor series, this is in an alternate continuity. So it’s likely that what we learn about the Nazgul in Middle-earth: Shadow of War won’t be “official” canon, but it will at least allow us to have fun.

Middle-earth: Shadow of War will be releasing on August 22 for the Xbox One, Playstation 4, and PC.
