Monster Hunter World has simplified the Upgrade System that the franchise had in the previous iterations. However, it is still very extensive and difficult for a new player to figure out. This Monster Hunter World Upgrades Guide will tell you everything from how to upgrade your medicines, weapons and other items.
We will also take a look at how weapon sharpness works in the game and then end with a comprehensive guide on Jewels and Gems that are available for you within the game.
Monster Hunter World Upgrades – How to
Upgrading items can be done with parts. Some of the best parts are found on monsters such as their claws or hides. Kill the monsters to scavenge those parts. Apart from this, you can also find common materials in open areas of the map. A pickaxe can be used to farm materials like that.
Consumables e.g. medicines can easily be upgraded by the player while moving. In order to upgrade weapons and armor, you need to head on to the Central Town Hub and enter the Forge Area. Smithy resides in the Forge Area and he can be used to upgrade equipment for yourself.
Now, let’s take a look at some of the specifics on how you can easily upgrade some of your equipment and what are some of the things that you need to be aware of. After that, we will talk about weapon sharpness and end on Jewels so that you know everything there is to know about upgrading.
Upgrade Armor Skills
In order to level up skills, you essentially need to equip multiple pieces of equipment that possess the same skill. This should allow you to level up that particular skill. It is important that you level up your skills in order for them to become effective. In this section of our guide, we have detailed some ways using which you can upgrade your Armor Skills:
Charms can be crafted similar to Weapons and Armor Sets. While you can only equip one Charm at any given time, they can easily add up to two levels to a Skill. Another way of leveling up skills is by equipping multiple pieces of an Armor Set having the same skill. For example, if you equip three pieces of an Armor Set having Guard, your Guard Skill will level up by +3.
How to Upgrade
Select the equipment you want to upgrade in the screen. Grey items represent equipment that you cannot upgrade, as you do not have the materials but you can easily upgrade the white items. You can also add the grey items to the wishlist as then you would be notified if you do manage to find enough resources to upgrade a certain item.
‘???’ on an upgrade item means that you have not found the part required to upgrade it. Consider this as sort of like a blueprint hunt. It is best though if you try to ignore these and focus on choosing 2 or 3 of your favorite weapons and then upgrading them before everything else. These weapons will be of considerable advantage during the end of the game.
You can also downgrade weapons to save wasted materials. This will allow you to take on new upgrade paths which suit your changing style of play. Downgrading will return the parts that you spent on the upgrade to your inventory.
Weapon Sharpness
The weapon sharpness stat represents the condition of your weapon. It is a dynamic stat. that will decrease as you use your weapon. This applies to all of the melee weapons in the game and there are certain colors which represent how sharp your weapon is. Let’s take a look at those colors and see what effect they have on the damage output of the weapon.
Weapons lose their ‘Sharpness’ when they are used, and you can check how sharp they are by looking at the top left corner of the screen. When the color changes, it means that the Sharpness of the weapon has fallen a level. The sharpness of a weapon acts as a direct multiplier for the damage of the weapon.
White is the best condition and has a multiplier of 1.3x. After this comes Green at 1.1x, Yellow at 1x, Orange at 0.75x followed by Red, which has a multiplier of 0.5x. The sharpness can be increased by using the Whetstone, as it is the standard way through which you can increase the sharpness of a particular weapon.
However, you can also use Smithy in the Forge to upgrade a weapon and increase its sharpness at the same time. Lastly, you can use the Sharpness Skill to have the Sharpness jump up one whole level which can be quite important for a high damage weapon which cannot unleash its power due to the fact that it has a Yellow or a Red sharpness level.
Before we look at the Jewels, remember that the lower the Sharpness of a weapon, the higher the chance of your attack bouncing off a monster and doing little to no damage. But do not worry, even if you have yellow weapons, there is a good chance that you will be able to upgrade them in the near future.
Jewels and Gems
Jewels will unlock for you towards the end of the main story. They will unlock together with 22 new armors. From these 22 armors, you will be able to find slots for jewels. Each armor will have a different number of slots for jewels.
Jewels modify your armor to enhance it. An armor can have up to 3 different jewel slots but most of them will have less. High-Rank monster armors will have better Jewel Slots than the Low-Rank ones. Each and every Jewel that you find in the game will give you a boost, and the bonuses will stack.
Since there are around a hundred jewels in Monster Hunter World, they are divided into types. The types range from Attack to Defense to Stamina to Preventative to Gathering among many others. Jewels can be used to enhance every one of your skills, and the rarity of a certain Jewel will decide the amount of boost that you are going to receive from it.
Jewels can be found at the end of the game through Treasure Quests, Reward Tickets and through High-Rank monster fights. Finding them is down to pure chance as well though, so do not be disheartened if you fail at the start. Keep on searching for them and you will eventually be able to get your hands on some quality additions to your armor.
Gems and Rubies can either be crafted or rewarded for you. Try to look for a Melding Pot if you have enough Melding Points and the money to create them. These Gems can then be used to craft and upgrade gear for you.
How to Upgrade Weapons
You can upgrade your Starting Weapons in Monster Hunter: World into other weapons. These upgrades require you to collect Monster parts. As you continue through the game, you gain access to better upgrades from High-Level Monsters. In addition to this, simpler weapons require simpler upgrade materials to be crafted.
These simpler upgrade materials do not require you to slay Monsters in the world and can be found by exploring the in-game world. In order to find these simpler upgrade materials such as Ores, you need a Pickaxe.
