GWENT will not be the first card game in the game industry as Hearthstone, a very popular card games, and many others are already in the market. Hearthstone has a huge community of dedicated followers and according to CD Projekt Red, getting GWENT to that level will be extremely hard.
Jakub Szamalek, the principal writer on Gwent, told PCGamesN that the Collectible Card Game sub-genre is popular partly because of Hearthstone. He added that it would be very difficult to top Hearthstone given that it has a huge community.
I think it’s obvious that [the popularity of CCGs is] in a huge part due to Hearthstone’s influence and the huge amount of success that it enjoyed. I think that’s why people really started thinking about filling up the space.
As to the question as to whether there is more room, from what I see, the market is shaped a bit like a pyramid, so there’s very little place at the top.
He added that “It’s extremely hard to get anywhere near close in terms of what Hearthstone enjoys in terms of number of players. But I think there is room for good card games, always, and I’m hoping that Gwent will prove to be one of them”.
GWENT will also support Cross Network play for both Xbox One and PC. However, PlayStation 4 is not yet confirmed, and according to the devs, they are looking into other options.
Also, a tournament for the game will take place during Gamescom 2017, which is currently underway, on August 25 for a total prize of $25000.
GWENT will also feature a single-player campaign titled “Thronebreaker” and CD Projekt Red has given us a glimpse at the campaign with a new teaser trailer.
GWENT The Witcher Card Game will launch for PC, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, but no specific release date has been announced.
