With previews of Assassin’s Creed Syndicate showing up on some websites one issue that appears to have surfaced is performance. While Eurogamer appear to believe the issues are fixed, VideoGamer point out that the preview build still suffers, who do we believe?
At this point my view is that this is a preview build, and it is likely to have performance issues. In a recent interview with Redbull website Francois Pelland may have revealed the real problem. The engine the game uses is just a more polished version of a broken engine:
“The Unity team did a massive investment on the engine over the course of three years,” says Pelland. “It’s been a long process for them. For a lot of them we’ve managed to polish a lot on what they’ve done.” The game certainly seems less buggy than Unity when it was previewed to journalists this time a year ago. Yes, we did encounter a cutscene with invisible characters again, but at least you aren’t able to float across the Thames on an invisible platform as we could the Seine.”
As we already know, Unity had its problems and this was down to the engine. If Syndicate is using this same engine then the same problems could still exist, until they are fixed of course. These issues may stand out in the preview build, but I’m sure fans of the Assassin’s Creed franchise are hoping that the final build will pull out the performance we expect.
Looking at the previews that have been released, will a game running at 900p/25fps be enough? Personally I think it will, but it is understandable that many won’t. If this a bad sign for Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate’s release? Right now unfortunately the answer has to be yes.
