According to a new prediction by analysts at DFC Intelligence, Nintendo Switch sales will have reached 40 million units by 2020, which is likely going to be welcome news for Nintendo. 40 million units will be three times what the Wii U sold in the first four years of its life on the shelves.

The forecast is optimistic for the Switch considering the conflicted reaction that many have had to the Switch’s reveal, with very few Triple-A games coming off the system at launch. However, DFC Intelligence has said that while Nintendo Switch sales will at first be hampered by initial hardware allocations and a slim launch lineup, they’ll be able to pick up and sell the console like hotcakes.
The main obstacle to the console, DFC said, is whether or not the console can gain a broad audience in the holiday season, saying that Nintendo has previously had problems introducing new hardware. Considering the previously lackluster sales record (especially compared to the original Wii) of the Wii U, there’s no telling if DFC’s forecast will actually turn out to be accurate.
However, despite the rather lackluster launch lineup, Nintendo has promised that they will have a steady stream of games both first and third-party coming up soon. Already, the Switch is going to be launching with its most anticipated title, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Other games that are coming out from Nintendo include Fire Emblem Warriors, Splatoon 2, Super Mario Odyssey, Xenoblade 2, and more, so hopefully once the release schedule of the Switch picks up, then Nintendo Switch sales will start increasing, especially around the holidays.
Considering that Zelda has always been a good seller, not to mention how Splatoon fared when it was released, hopefully they, along with Mario and Fire Emblem, will serve as system-sellers. The Nintendo Switch will be releasing March 3.
