In contrast to what the rumors suggested, it looks like Destiny 2 is not going to be released this year in September after all. Instead, we are being told that the game might actually get yet another The Taken King sized expansion.
Needless to say, this has not come out from Bungie or any of the officials – they would have played around a good long time before letting something like this slip – however, it does come from gaming industry’s analysts.
Doug Creutz, the Senior Research Analyst for Media and Video Games at Cowen and Company (a financial services and research firm), states that they were expecting Bungie to release the sequel to keep their business upside, but since that is not happening, a major expansion is certainly going to be in the plans.
Our model assumes a Taken King-sized expansion for Destiny in 2016. We did think that Destiny 2 was a possible, and even likely, source of upside in 2016. However, as long as there is new Destiny content in 2016, we feel confident in our overall company growth assumptions and would remain bullish on the long-term value of the franchise.
This does make sense. It is agreeable that Destiny is a large enough franchise now to survive a couple of years without even being touched, but the current player base is definitely going to get weary thanks to the new financial model being used by the developers.
In the case of long term game model like this one, delays never sit well and an expansion like The Taken King might actually help keep the excitement going. What do you think?
