According to Hideo Kojima, the Death Stranding trailer that he showed everyone at the Playstation E3 conference is apparently actually indicative of the final game, whenever it will come out (likely sometime in 2019 or 2020). The trailer, which seemed filled with symbolism but not much substance, was definitely one of the most distinct trailers shown.
The trailer, which starred Norman Reedus (who’s likely going to be the game’s protagonist), involved a large amount of dead marine life (crabs and whales and dolphins galore), oil, cables, and a Caesarian section on Norman Reedus after he apparently gave birth. Also notable in the trailer were five ominous figures floating in the sky, who might be the villains.
The Death Stranding trailer also involved a snippet of poetry from William Blake’s “Auguries of Innocence”. While the poetry sounds very nice, what it seems to talk about is either god-like power or innocence while dealing with corruption and evil.
If the Death Stranding trailer is indeed indicative of what will be in the final game, we may end up with a plot as complicated as any of the Metal Gear games, with strange powers and a possible apocalypse scenario.
Kojima has said that being cryptic was necessary in order to stimulate discussion of the Death Stranding trailer, so that we can continue to discuss it right up until the game comes out. If Kojima continues to put out new trailers for it at subsequent E3s, the discussion may even get more animated.
Hopefully, as we get more information on Death Stranding’s production, we’ll end up seeing the dream team that was supposed to be for Silent Hills before Konami canned it. At least one portion of the trailer, the piles of dead sea creatures and machinery, are somewhat indicative of Junji Ito’s work, though we have no idea if he’s involved.
Anyway, we’ll just have to wait until more information comes out.
